Imagine if you were so self conscious about one of your physical features; take your nose for example. You felt that it didn’t suit you and was not positive for your life or your self-esteem. Now imagine if when you showed up at a clinic to pay to get it changed and they turned you away and refused to help you, even after explaining how badly this feature made you feel. While many do not support the idea of cosmetic surgeries, you would feel violated if you were deprived of the right to elect this option for yourself. It is crucial that women have the option to get an abortion legally. Some are passionately against abortion for a multitude of reasons. An anonymous responder of a survey conducted on Zoho says, “In my opinion, the person who aborts a child is a criminal. No one has the right to kill another human being. Life is a gift from God. He is the only one who decides when it’s time to go.” (Campos-Pereira) Religious people have interpreted bible verses as against abortion and will remain callous and assertive to support their beliefs. Nonetheless, one must remember the separation of church and state. When our country was established, it was decided that religion could not determine law, yet there is still a strong religious bias that affects law-making. Whether it be in the workfield, at home, or regarding healthcare, society hasn't reached the point of equality that is necessary for societal equilibrium. In an interview conducted with mother of four, Cindy Pereira, she says, “A woman having control over her own reproductive system obviously brings her closer to being equal to men”. (Campos-Pereira) Even women with “substantial” reasons to wish to abort are denied the option in some places. Statistics show that the reasons to abort are “21% inadequate finances, 21% not ready for responsibility, 16% woman’s life would be changed too much, 12% problems with relationships, unmarried, 11% too young and/or immature, 8% children are all grown; she has all she wants, 3% baby has possible health problems, t form for 20 more weeks.” (Kleeman) This is another point that should be recognized.
