LGBT CIVIL RIGHTS In the recent years things have became widely accepted across this country and being homosexual is one of them. Now in the past it was looked down upon always and is still looked down by some people today. Though this has changed vastly with more people accepting people as who they are then just based of their sexuality.…
On June 26, 2015 the United States Justices decided on a pivotal case in American history. In a close 5-4 vote the Justices deemed that same-sex marriage was constitutional via the 14th amendment. The Obergefell et al. v. Hodges case was the finality of a slow evolving progression for same-sex marriage (Obergefell v. Hodges). This landmark decision allowed same-sex marriage to be legal in the United States.…
Same-Sex Marriage in New York "Who would give a law to lovers? Love is unto itself a higher law" ("Boethius"), a quote stated by a Roman philosopher Anicius Manlius Severinus Boëthius in 524 (Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius - Biography). Obviously, laws have nothing to do to interfere the love in theory; however, as the discrimination that homosexual people receive for a long period, people in New York has to fight for their equal right to have the law and live under the protection of it. Just like Boethius states, it is ironic that love have to be approved. No body could judge love; ridiculously, almost everybody gives discrimination to unusual love.…
The LGBT community consists of members that are lesbian, gay, bi, and/or transgender. This paper will address the question of whether the United States should make an amendment for the equal rights of the LGBT community. An amendment is an article that is added to the United States constitution that obliges states to follow. To be able to create an amendment, the amendment must be approved by three-fourths of the states. Three-fourths of the states means that at least thirty-eight states would have to approve the amendment in order to generate the new amendment.…
For many years, gay marriage has been seen as something that is taboo or immoral, but as United States society has come to be more accepting, gay marriage has become a regular occurrence. On June 26, 2015, American society changed forever when the ruling in favor of the plaintiff in the Obergefell v. Hodges case legalized homosexual marriage in the United States. Many people have opposed the marriage of two men or two women for religious purposes. However, many people also support said marriage, reasoning that love is love no matter the gender of the individuals getting married. The ruling made nine months ago has effected people of all sexualities and religious affiliations.…
Over the course of American history, various civil rights movements have arisen from marginalized groups demanding equality and protection under the law. In this report, the history of the LGBTQ rights movement is examined, specifically focusing on the rights of gay and lesbian couples. The rights of these couples are evaluated both on a social and institutional level. Starting with the 1950’s, trends and major themes present within each decade are identified and discussed. Additionally, the significance of these events is discussed as it pertains to the recent Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage on a national scale.…
http://gaymarriage.procon.org/ The first source; http://gaymarriage.procon.org/; fits into our presentation in a variety of ways. For one, our project explains and discusses the issues the world knew, and still continues to know, with homosexuality. It provides the pros and cons of the rights for people such as these, (not trying to cause any offense here), as well as reasonable arguments and questions. The source provides important dates for as to when some rights were actually legalized in other countries.…
An ever-so prevalent issue that I would like to bring to the forefront of discussion is the continuation of depriving the LGBTQ community on a global-scale the security of expressing their identity without persecution and scrutiny. With a family that originates from Vietnam, their outlook on life and thoughts on more modern-social topics have always been an outdated, and intolerant one. Being the archetypal "closeted" kid, this presented itself as an issue, as I know personally I will never live up to be the ideal masculine image of what a normative male should be in my Mother's eyes, and I will never be one to wed and have children in hopes of continuing my Father's pedigree. In a sense, I've been living life feeling strangled by an invisible…
The LGBT(lesbian gay bisexual and transgender) community has always faced oppression,Although same sex marriage is legal now in all states it was a very difficult process it took are country many years to pass a law where a male and a male can be married or a female and a female. Most LGBT people have experienced anything from mean comments to crazy stares and have to face being unaccepted from some of the closest people to them. Many LGBT people still get oppressed to this day,the problem isn't the fact that they love someone of the opposite sex the problem is their surroundings. Often people of religion are not accepting to the LGBTQ community the are driven to believe that being “Gay” is a sin and anyone who “chooses” to be gay should pray…
Governments, I believe, are partially responsible for a part of this intolerance. Gay marriage hasn’t been legal in America for a year, conversion therapy is legal in 45 states and protected in 6, and there are still 77 countries where being gay is illegal. There have been many reported cases of conversion therapy where the patient has committed suicide as a cause of the therapy that has no proof of working. In the one and only study where it was said that conversion therapy worked, the person who conducted it, Robert Spitzer, retracted his study saying that it was based only off opinion instead of fact or observation. Homosexuality was still counted as a mental illness up until 4 years ago!…
Transgender Rights in the United States “You know, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender people are people.” ("Judith Light Quote." BrainyQuote. Xplore, n.d. Web. 18 Oct. 2015.)…
Even if laws have been passed for LGBTQ+ and Religious Freedom protection, there are still lots of drama happening around them, and still lots of laws that need to be passed. Even though twenty-one states have passed RFRA, it failed in thirteen other states. The RFRA was also introduced to Congress in 2015 and was defeated by the Senate. The reason some don’t like the law is people think people protecting their Religious Freedom are using the RFRA as a weapon. For instance, the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day was accused of removing children from school to harvest Pecans, and they used the RFRA as their backbone.…
Recognition of gay and lesbian marriage with respect to Federalism 1. Edited Book - The lesbian and Gay Movement and the state edited by Manon Tremblay, David Paternotte and Carol Johnson This books points out the growing recognition of lesbian and gay, in short LGBT, rights around the world. Despite the many obstructions with regards to researching and investigating on LGBT, this book aims to bring light on the relationship between the state and LGBT movements, focusing on two key queries: “to what extent is the lesbian and gay movement influenced by the state and whether the movement has influenced the state” (Manon & David eds. 2011,…
Equal Rights for the Homosexual Community in America The United States is the country where many individuals come to seek opportunity and freedom. The American Dream is to become successful and experience happiness. People that come from other countries have misconceptions about how perfect the country is, because in reality there are serious issues the country is facing.…
For example, “The shirt was suppose to be on sale, but when I got there it was regular priced, that was so gay because I didn’t have enough money to buy it.” The word gay is also used in the right context on occasions when people think that the actions of others of the same sex are doing something that seems to be of homosexual nature. As time progresses the restrictions and secrecy that have been put on the homosexual community have broadened. There are thousands of events today thrown by the gay community, for people to come out openly and express their characteristics without shame. In 1892, “Wisconsin [became] the first state to outlaw discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation” (The American Gay Rights Movement).…
