Opponents of gay marriage have the better ballot record than supporters do at the ballot box. However, the court’s decision can be ruled narrowly and the constitution could give gay and lesbian couples the right to marry and same sex marriage become legal all throughout the United States. The advocates of same sex marriage would obviously have the victory and it would be a major game change for the opponents of same sex marriage. The gay marriage opponents would also have a victory but not in the same sense because then that would preclude all the future court challenges and would not overturn the existing state laws allowing gay marriages. On June 26, 2015 the Supreme Court declared that gay and lesbian couples have the right to marry in the United States. The states in the South and Midwest had to stop enforcing their bans on same sex marriages because of this declaration by the Supreme Court. After the decision Atlanta issued three same sec couples marriage licenses. Meanwhile supporters of gay right cheered, danced and wept outside of the court house. This put breathtaking changes in the nation’s social norms. Anthony Kennedy, a Justice wrote a majority opinion just like he had for the previous gay rights cases (Sherman).
Obergefell held up of picture of his late spouse and said that their love is equal. He got a congratulatory phone call from Barack Obama o his victory for him and his late lover John. Obama was ecstatic about the decision because he said it was an affirmation that all Americans are created equal
