Legal Drinking Age To 18 Essay

Several individuals in the United States today had the discussion of what the legal age drinking should be. Individuals, political groups, and organizations express that the legal drinking age should remain at twenty-one years old, but others argue the legal age should be lowered to eighteen years old. This is understandable considering that at the age of eighteen you can vote, serve in the military, get married, and sign legal documents or contracts. Therefore, they are able as young adults to make their own decisions and in the United States if you are eighteen, you are a legal adult. In other countries that have, eighteen or nineteen as the legal drinking age there are fewer driving under the influence accidents and fatalities. Consequently, allowing eighteen year olds to consume alcohol in regulated atmosphere with supervision would decrease unsafe drinking activity. These unsafe drinking activities occur in unsupervised locations such as college campus fraternities or house parties where they may be more prone to binge drinking and other unsafe behavior. Educating and giving guidance about being responsible and drinking in moderation along with the importance of selecting a designated driver will most likely occur in a regulated environment than in an unsupervised environment. Most opponents disagree by arguing that lowering the drinking age, you are only allowing a greater portion of the population to drink in bars and in nightclub, which are not safe environments, and therefore the rate of assaults and violent crimes would increase. They stress that the drinking age should be restricted to a higher age based on the responsibility required to you and to others.
