Abstract
IT590: Legal and Ethical Issues in IT Unit one discusses the concept of using special bots on social networking sites in order to interact with other users. There is much controversy on the use of these social bots in regards to ethics. It is estimated approximately fifty percent of web traffic is through use of bots. These bots have been set up to send email, monitor forums and others used for malicious activities such as phishing scams and steal information. Social bots utilize social media networks to promote ideas, opinions, values or market products and services. One of the biggest benefits of using social bots is reaching a larger targeted demographic for minimal cost to the organizations. It is important to understand the business objectives for utilizing social bots, but it is estimated to only require as little as an hour a day for time investment in order to generate increased traffic from potential new customers. The data collection has provided researchers to present case studies with trends, methods to identify specific demographics based on predetermined criteria. For instance this collected data can allow researcher to identify women with postpartum depression.
