It is a requirement by the FDA that companies provide fair and balanced information as it appeals to food or drugs. This is an ethical issue because companies are more worried about making a profit instead of the well-being of its consumers.
Against Direct-toConsumer by drug companies A company by the name of Upjohn Company became the first known manufacturer to advertise directly to consumers when it advertised for Rogaine (Halbert, 2012). Since then, there have been many companies that chose this type of marketing to get word out about different drugs available to consumers for various reasons. Direct-to-Consumer marketing can be pushed onto consumers through various social media platforms such as: Facebook, twitter, and youtube. These are three popular social media sites because they attract a lot of traffic for pharmaceutical companies to reach out to. The overall approval for any direct-to-consumer marketing is passed down by the Food and Drug Administration as they play a vital role in monitoring drugs and how they’re communicated to consumers. Furthermore, the Government Accountability Office found that the test results of four different DTC genetic testing websites were misleading (Egilman, 2012). This is a major reason that I am against this type of marketing because it can be very misleading as pointed out above and mass marketing drugs is not a safe way to try something of that nature.
