On June 3rd of this year, my father passed away, this was a very difficult moment in my life and many decisions had to be made on his behalf. Preceding my father death, my parents determined that it was important as the only child to be the Executor of his Estate in an effort to propel me into manhood and the realities of life. My parents’ decision regarding my role after my father’s death was programmed and classical because they knew this honor would instill the strength, courage and pride needed to survive in this world as a young African-American man. During this time, I learned the significance of properly planning, organizing and managing the history of a person‘s entire life; therefore, I am thankful to my parents for trusting me…

Plenty of children go through life everyday with hostility in their household from their own parents. A Lot of people say it comes from, how each individual parent was raised during their own childhood. Whether that’s poverty, feeling in charge, or even just wanting to see your children succeed in life. I looked at two short stories today. One was by an author named Lucille Clifton called “ Forgiving My Father”, and the second one was called “ My Fathers, in Heaven, is Reading Out Loud” by Li-Young Lee.…

Thriving Through Adversity Growing up, as the oldest of three girls, I soon developed a sense of entitlement that, in the years to come, I would find did not suit me well. Fortified by the nurturing nature of my mother, I, being the strong willed, independent, and self righteous child I was, found that the ebb and flow needed in aiding the fresh wounds left by the separation of my parents was far less attainable than the easily reachable strategy, that I oftentimes fell back on, known as distancing myself from all that made me feel vulnerable. Not having a strong father figure in my life has helped to shape me not only as a student, a writer, a daughter, or a sister, but a person. Most would view this situation negatively but I choose to…

Every person in this world has an individual creativity built within them. My individual creativity personally took me a while to uncover, I only recently unearthed my true creativity during my junior year. I express my creativity through makeup, poetry, painting, drawing and redecorating my surroundings such as my room which I like to think of as my sanctuary because it’s the only place I can disconnect myself from everything, focus on myself and reflect on my days. Makeup is my main outlet of expression since that’s the one that’s in the spotlight and is a quote on quote paraded for the public eye to see when used correctly and minimally to enhance ones beauty it makes a person look more presentable and put together. I was inspired to write…
