Lefty: A Short Story

Great Essays
I wake up the next day to Lefty stroking my hair. As I slowly open my eyes, I gaze up giving off a satisfied smile. “Good morning, Beautiful,” Lefty said as he leans in to kiss me. He places a gentle kiss on my lips as he asks, “how are you feeling this morning?” A faint laugh comes from me as I answer, “better now that I see you.” Lefty smirks as he settles himself back in the bed. He lays on his side face to face with me as he continues to run his fingers through my locks. I bring up my hand and start to fondle his chest. Using the tips of my fingers to outline every crease and muscle on his chest. “This is perfect,” I hushed while absorbing every ounce of Lefty’s fondness. He nuzzles his face in the crevice of my neck while I hold his head adoring the harmony this man possesses. We remain still in each other’s clutches until we regain control over our breaths. Lefty brings his head up, smiling with fulfilment as he rubs his nose against mine. “Was it good for you?” I playfully ask, giggling like a child. Lefty seductively responds, “you have no idea,” as he softly kisses me once more. I detach my body from him and grab the sheet, draping it around myself as I strut to the bathroom. I look at myself in the mirror and notice an instant glow on my face. This man makes me so, unbelievably happy, I must pinch myself to make sure this isn’t a dream. I finish up in the bathroom and leave to reenter the bedroom to see Lefty is no longer there. I throw the sheet back on the bed and throw on some pajamas before heading out to find him. I walk through my house nervously, when I spot him in the kitchen. “What are you doing?” I ask. “I got to take care of my baby,” he answers as he is standing in front of the stove cooking. I stroll up behind him, placing my hands on his chest and the side of my cheek on his back. I can feel Lefty taking in and releasing breaths of air, as the vibrations sooth me into peace. Absorbing Lefty’s essence, blissfully content in his company. Lefty pats my hand with his as he announces, “go sit down, it is time to eat.” I leisurely disconnect from him and trot over to the table to

In her 1983 commencement address, “A Left-Handed Commencement Speech,” Ursula K Le Guin offers a very straightforward yet motivational message to graduates of Mills College, an all female school. She states that women are foreigners in an extremely male-dominated society full of aggression and power and emphasizes her argument that women are peaceful compared to men, thus highlighting the difference between the two genders. She encourages her audience to live and succeed on their own terms rather than emulating “Machoman” by creating an emotional connection with her audience, establishing her credibility, and crafting an image of woman’s own country that effectively stresses the separation between men and women but appeals to the need for equality.…

The Crow in the Woods The Crow in the Woods by John Updike is unlike any other story I have read before. The author does an odd but wonderful job in describing in detail the thoughts and surroundings of an average married man. This story meets course goal number seven as it enhances the students’ understanding of the value of holistic thinking in making informed judgments and in applying values as they become increasingly conscious of what is at stake if we fail to understand the relationship between human culture and the environment.…
