In Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer which discussed the issue of inherent presidential power; the Supreme Court ruled that the President did not have the inherent authority to seize private property without authority given from Congress. In Justice Black’s opinion, he makes it clear that even if the president had the power to take over the steel mill he needs to have a congressional statute and it can not be used to settle labor disputes even if they were to disrupt the economy as the president argued. He also says that the seizure cannot be justified due to the president being Commander in Chief by saying that “we cannot with faithfulness to our constitutional system hold that the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces has the ultimate power as such to take possession of private property in order to keep labor disputes from stopping production. This is a job for the Nation's lawmakers, not for its military authorities.” He even goes a step further in saying that the Executive’s job to make sure that laws are faithfully executed…

After years of campaigning by feminists, in 1972, Congress approved the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution, which reads, “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.” Those in government believed that the Amendment would pass easily among the states. Though such would be an astounding instance of literary foreshadow, Shakespeare may very well have written these lines with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in mind. As a bright and confident individual unafraid to take on challenges, Ginsburg struggled throughout life to make her way in a society that worked to dissuade ambitious women. Ultimately, Ginsburg transformed her battle with gender discrimination into a more universal fight for civil rights, equality, and social justice. On August 10, 1993, Ruth Bader Ginsburg became the…

The 19th amendment, Title VII, Title IX, Roe v. Wade; while all of these are ratifications that the United States has implemented throughout its short history to transform itself into a nation whose ideals fall upon equality, there was a time when they did not exist and inequality was rampant among gender, race, and social class. It has taken hundreds of years to reach the societal equality we have today and it is all thanks to the first steps that were taken by women and slaves in the late 18th century. Within her essay, Murray brings the issues of intellectual and spiritual…
