Lecture Skiping Persuasive Essay

Improved Essays
Laidlaw draws on interviews with students and professors to understand the reasons behind lecture skipping. The author mentions Brian Maxwell, a student who created a website for sharing course notes with other students for free.
The article examines when students skip lectures and why. Certain interviewees stated they missed lectures because other students were doing so. Christine Sypnowich a lecturer at Queens University stated “it’s a web culture and there’s something archaic about walking to a real event with real people” (2006). Other students said they could do so in the first year but not when work and exams were demanding and that lectures are too early in the morning and don’t fit in with their social life. In his speech, he talked about the struggles that the team faced on the way to reaching their goal of winning a college national championship. Furthermore, Josh documented the lives of the players and showed the audience the struggles they faced every day, but showed us how each of them overcame the obstacles. Additionally, he talked about the life long relationships he made with the player by going out with them and practically being a member of the team.…

In high school, students are constantly reminded of the need to pursue an education beyond high school. Students are advised to take certain steps towards receiving a higher education, usually at a university that most individuals are familiar with. When I think about college life, I think of what some may picture out of a typical movie scene. I see thousands of students walking across a beautifully designed campus, some swarming the hallways scurrying from class to class, others strolling their way over to the campus Recreation Center for some down time. In Graeme Wood’s “Is College Doomed,” Wood investigates into a new perspective of a for-profit undergraduate education system that lacks a campus in which individuals associate with the typical university, called Minerva.…

In the essay “The Dog Ate My Disk, an Other Tales of Woe” Professor Carolyn Foster Segal explains that even after lengthy syllabus warnings and a humorous cartoon of a cat explaining to its teacher that a dog ate its homework, students still came up with multiple excuses for being tardy, absent or turning in assigned work late. She categorized the excuses into these five categories, the family, the best friend, the evils in dorm life, the evils in technology, and the totally bizarre. For family, Segal points out that “The death of the grandfather/grandmother is, of course, the grandmother of all excuses” (565). Students will use that excuse all the time because the teacher will probably show pity for them in their sorrow. Demonstrating…

The issue of declawing is being made more obvious to the horrors it can cause to your beloved feline friend. When an onychectomy, otherwise known as a declaw, is performed it is equal to cutting off your finger at the first knuckle. The bone of the third phalanx is removed, it is not just cutting the nail off. Cat's nails retract, by cutting into these muscles and tendons you risk serious long-term physical and emotional impacts. 61 of 163 cats experienced chronic pain for 1-42 days after the surgery ("American Veterinary Medical Association", 2016).…

Daniel R. Marburger writes in his essay, “Does Mandatory Attendance Improve Student Performance,” that from an economic standpoint, the issue becomes one of time allocation, as the students choose between competing academic and nonacademic uses of their time. With online courses, the added benefit is that material is then accessible 24 hours a day 7 days a week. If attendance policies are designed to weed out slackers, one of the biggest assets to online courses is that there can’t be any slackers. In an online environment, attendance is only evident if the student actually participates in the classroom discussion. I can’t help but draw the conclusion that participation should replace mere presence in the classroom.…

After reviewing my persuasive speech over why the University of Oklahoma is the best university in the nation, I would sum up my speech as a little bit of train wreck. Although I made good claims with factual evidence, the amount of stuttering I did, and all the times I was choked up throughout the speech drew my audience’s attention away. From this, I lost my audience’s belief that I was competent of the information I was reiterating to them. At the introduction of my speech I believe I started out fairly strong and gave a good run down of the coming speech.…

By using the class time to answer questions about confusing topics in the lecture, it creates a better understanding of the information in the lecture.
