I chose to write a parody of LeBron James returning back to Cleveland, after leaving for Miami in 2014. I found a lot of similarities between Act 1 and the events that transpired in the fall in 2014. LeBron James is arguably one of the best basketball players of all time and was seen by many as the heir to Michael Jordan. Therefore he was dubbed by the media as King James in the wake of his basketball success and accolades he had achieved by the fall of 2014. I found this to share similar characteristics to that of Julius Caesar and thus where my intervention began. It faces the challenge of being culturally relevant as today in the 21st century culture had shifted away from the structure of Shakespeare plays. An example of this is the shift away from the monarchy. Today, through democracy western countries are governed by a new set of paradigms. Everyone today has an equal vote, equal rights and royalty is not seen in bloodline anymore. As each new generation is brought up, it is further away from when the monarchy was culturally significant. “In my work as an academic, I talk to a lot of students, many of them born since Princess Diana died, and the traditions of the monarchy mean little to them. The very concept of hereditary privilege is likely to provoke resentment rather than reverence” (Whitlock, 2016). With this shift away from the monarchy, many of Shakespeare’s work become less significant, as each new generation struggle to relate to the narratives. This is why I chose to parody Julius Caesar with LeBron James. LeBron James is culturally iconic character today, many people know of him and his story and can relate. The struggle of characters such as Macbeth, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet or Julius Caesar are not struggles of people today. No one is poisoning anyone so that they can re-marry Gertrude and become King of
