Poetry by Heart Poetry Analysis In the poem, “Somewhere in America”, written by an anonymous poet associated with the Get Lit Project, brings up the truth about issues America has faced from generation to generation. Belissa Escobedo, Rhiannon McGavin, and Zariya Allen, are the three performers that help shed light on the world we live in today and how little it’s changed. The issues that the girls cover include the hypocrisy of society and the hidden truths that people have the right to know about. More specifically, these issues are very important to the nation, yet not discussed in school. “Somewhere in America” shows its two most dominant literary devices through allusion and symbolism.…

Living in America a country where we are taught at a young age that we must live and praise America and thank America for keeping us safe and protected. We pledge to the flag everyday, through grade school we learn about our history on a daily bases, and we are told that this is the home of the brave and the land of the free. But who is all this really addressed to. Is it addressing to all or is it really being addressed to those of white ancestry, or maybe to the those of different race who are to blind to see that we have to work doubly as hard to achieve and succeed here in America. And tell me why this is called the land of the free if there's Arab Americans being discriminated everyday just because of their race, religion, and name.…

After reading, “It’s Hard to Make it in America: How the United States Stopped Being the Land of Opportunity” by Lane Kenworthy, I realized that people from lower income families don’t have the same chances that people from higher income families have. I think that this is worth the read because it shows things from the lower income families point of view. That side is not usually seen because it isn’t good to publicize the poor and the weak in a country, so instead they only show how successful the higher income people are , and try to forget about the lower income families who are trying to survive too. Overall my impression of the article was that it was very well written and compelling. I think that it will really make some of the people with better opportunity maybe doublethink and be more understanding towards…

The scarcity of resources has the potential to cause damage to modern society in the near future. Resources like food, water, and fuels help maintain society. Without proper access or enough resources to go around, society can be in for some consequences. In Jared Diamond’s essay, “The Last Americans”, he explains how the Mayan civilization collapsed due to a variety of reasons, one of which being a lack of resources. He then draws parallels to how the issue could play a role in modern society.…

In terms of questions that I feel were provoked by the reading I recall my curiosity of how other parts of the North American continent have changed as a result of a shift in political nature (Mexico and Canada). Since the countries are so close to the United States I wondered what the data from those countries in terms of immigration looked like. As far as what was missing or unanswered from the first chapter I'm hesitant to say as there is still much more to George Lipsitz book that I have yet to read. Taking into account my somewhat brief experience with American Studies up to this point I'd say that Lipsitz is not only presenting American Studies within a new frame but also America itself. My experience with his work has so far emanated…

Chapter three, in the 5th edition of American Government: Your voice, your future, is about how public opinions, attitudes, and beliefs are established and used politically. Chapter three also touches on polling and its use in the political system, government power, and the differences between liberalism and conservatism. As stated in the text, Americans do not share the same concerns when it comes to how involved the government is in everyday living. In “Be American,” Carlos Bulosan reveals the lack of choice a Filipino had at the time through the story of someone’s cousin, Consorcio, and his struggle to gain citizenship in America. Bulosan’s short story shares this idea of no choice with a political cartoon known as “What Will He Do,” which depicts President McKinley deciding whether or not to keep the Philippines or “send them to Spain” while the globe watches for his decision. Through the visual of President McKinley making a decision for the Philippines, the political cartoon “What Will He Do,” argues the Philippines are deprived of choice. “Be American” mirrors this argument by linking the Consorcio and his cousin to the idea of lack of choice.…
