Studying is an important part of succeeding in one’s academic career. Certain methods of studying can make it more effective for certain students. These methods can be divided into three basic categories of learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic (Ezekiel, 2012). It’s possible for students to prefer one or even all of the learning styles. Knowing one’s preferred learning style is key for effective studying. For example, Austin is a student who, through taking multiple learning style assessments, learned that he is mostly a visual and kinesthetic learner (Fleming, 2015). Knowing this, he has taken steps to study in ways which correspond to his preferred styles. It is important for a student to understand their personal learning style in order to employ the studying techniques which would benefit …show more content…
The learning style assessment created by Pat Wyman, M.A (2011), suggests that Austin’s preferred learning style is visual. Visual learners “prefer to think in pictures or movies” (Wyman, 2015). According to EducationPlanner.org (2011), Visual learners understand and remember things by looking at them. They don’t benefit well from being told how to do something; they need to be shown (Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency, 2011). One technique visual learners can use to study more effectively is to draw pictures that showcase the ideas they want to remember. When visual learners draw pictures, they put the information they have accumulated and put it into the form in which they learn best. Another technique is to color code. Consider the student Austin, when he studies for history, he likes to highlight the main headers in orange so that he can easily refer back to them, and highlight important information in blue so that he can focus on the most important parts. Using these techniques can help visual learners visualize and better understand
