Learning can be shown to have occurred when students learn new material, knowledge or can use a new expertise.1, 2 It is an unceasing lifetime process, best achieved through real life experience. Experienced teachers recognize that each student reacts very differently to the same learning experiences during their period of study in the dental college. This discrepancy indicates dissimilarities in the students’ learning style, defined as ‘an individual’s characteristic, but potentially flexible way of interacting with a learning environment.3 Recognizing students’ learning individualities may lead to improvement in areas such as designing of course.4 A fundamental key to positively inducing effective learning and student performance is in introducing …show more content…
This questionnaire is built on the earlier work of David Kolb.6 This author stated that learning styles mature as a result of inborn factors, prior experiences, and requirements of the surroundings in which the person lives. It was later translated to Spanish and was finally adapted for educational purpose.17 The LSQ is designed to assess the relative strengths of four different learning styles: Activist, Reflector, Theorist, and …show more content…

Kolb’s experiential learning theory has been widely influential in adult learning. The theory and associated instruments continue to be criticized, but rarely is the graphical model itself examined. This is significant because models can aid scientific understanding and progress, as well as theory development and research. Applying accepted modelling and categorization criteria to Kolb’s basic model reveals fundamental graphic syntax errors, a failure to meet modellers’ graphic sufficiency and simplification tests, categorization and definitional problems relating to learning activities and typologies, misconstrued bi-polarities and flawed logic.…

Three learning theories that will be addressed in this discussion are as follows, self-directed and optimized, transformative, and critical reflection. Chen (2014) investigates “adult learners are self-directed and their learning is optimized when their experience is recognized and utilized in the learning process” (p. 407). Adult students are not 'clear slates' and their background turns into the medium through which substance is found out and in which to rethink new objectives to achieve (Chen, 2014). Self-directed is appropriate for an adult due to the connection that is made with their life experiences, the adult is able to plan and implement learning based upon their desire and initiation to learn. Self-directed is inappropriate for children because children rely upon the teacher as the caretaker to their education and implementation of it.…

Also, individuals can be helped to learn more effectively by the identification of their lesser preferred learning styles and the strengthening of these through the application of the experiential learning cycle (McLeod, S. A. 2013). When working with developmental education students, I plan to use this method to possibly bring out my students abilities from each stage of Kolb’s experiential learning cycle because almost everyone needs some kind of push to ignite learning, In conclusion, as we all know learning is based on various circumstances from life’s experiences to heredity. As I engaged in each model, I was able to relate personally in some way rather it was in my own life experiences or through my students. I believe this model could be expanded upon in my own practical world.…

According to The Vark learning styles questionnaire the two learning styles that I learn best with best are aural and kinesthetic. Aural means I learn best when hearing the information spoken and by asking questions about the concept I am learning. The other way I learn best is being kinesthetic which means I use my five senses and hands on experiences to help me learn. The Aural side of me likes to remember stories, examples, and jokes, to be to relate them to the concept I am learning. I have found that I when attended class and really focus on what the instructor or professor is teaching I am able to grasp the concept that is being taught.…

Traditionally, the dental profession and the medical profession were perceived as two separate entities, however, this bifurcated health system has created an epidemic in oral disease with our aging population (Nagro, 2016). In 1840, when the first dental school in the world opened, it was suggested that dental courses should be added to the medical curriculum, however, this proposal was rejected. This reminds us of the ongoing disparity between the medical and dental profession (Beck, 2017).…

According to the Learning Styles Inventory. My most developed and strongest learning styles are bodily-kinesthetic, verbal-linguistic, musical, interpersonal, and intrapersonal. The test reveals that I am not highly developed in any particular type of intelligence and I am weak and underdeveloped in visual-spatial, logical-mathematical, and naturalist intelligences. The book suggests that as a person with stronger interpersonal strengths, study strategies such as going over notes with fellow students are helpful. Based on my results as a strong verbal-linguistic individual, rewriting my notes in order to eliminate excess information and to hone into the important ideas, would be beneficial to my success in this course.…

Not all learning styles can fit into a specific situation, there are times when a kinesthetic style is better than an aural. By becoming proficient in all learning styles, I would become flexible in all learning situations. The student should be able to shift towards the professors teaching styles in addition to exceling in their learning environment. Now, I work the best with the aural, kinesthetic, and read/write learning styles, with the weakest like being the visual learning style. By taking the content learned to the next level by shifting it across learning styles, I would gain a greater understanding towards it.…

The first semester of dental school has been an important but invaluable eye-opening experience for me. It has been incredibly enjoyable but also challenging. Before starting dental school, I expected the first semester of dental school to be more relaxed so that it gave us time to settle into university life as a mature student. However, I was mistaken because getting through the first semester required a lot of focus, hard-work, time and commitment in order to ensure that you understood the vast amount of knowledge that was covered in the space of 4 months. I planned to study and have a regular part-time job but after a few weeks when the lectures started piling up, I found it extremely difficult to juggle both my studies and my job.…

Reading Reflection: 5 The article by Groves (2005) summarizes the results of the study that investigated the impact of a graduate-entry level Problem-Based Learning curriculum (PBL) on individual learning style and the relationship between learning style, academic achievement, and clinical reasoning skill. Initially, 115 first-year medical students from a cohort of 272 students were recruited for the study at the beginning of their undergraduate medical education. However, only 77 students completed the study. These students had a prior tertiary degree in the areas such as biological sciences, health professions, physical sciences and social sciences.…
