Reflection On Adult Learning

Improved Essays
Upon reflection and analysis of my successes and challenges throughout this course, I discovered that through previous jobs and training situations, I had indeed used a few of these theories and was aware of the different learning styles just didn 't know them by name. Through this course, I further developed my understanding into the various learning styles and theories of Adult Learning, which can also apply to the training, teaching, and interaction with the teenagers I am involved with through my hockey association. I believe that the instructional materials provided through this course will be beneficial when working in a facilitator capacity, and valuable in my everyday life. I will discuss, the personal challenges identified in my Individual …show more content…
My previously completed courses online were all individual study, except to lend a hand to one another through forum posts, so this was a new process for me. In actuality, I have never enjoyed group work; I am extremely autonomous, always set goals for myself and find it difficult to rely on other individuals to reach my desired results; I found this assignment, especially challenging. Throughout my previously completed online courses, my assignments were always submitted on or before the due date, and waiting for other group members to answer posts or the general lack of any sense of urgency within the group caused me countless restless nights and stressful days. Although I tried to connect early on in this process, it took better than a week for anyone to reply. Once the group was able to come together, and we had a little clarification as to the guidelines for the group assignment, everyone pitched in, and we put together an excellent website presentation. Connecting with team members to complete our review of the other group presentations didn 't go all that smoothly as there were members who didn 't contribute to that final review, and we were right down to the wire to submit our final group …show more content…
I believe I was successful in learning how to organize my schedule, which allowed me to move smoothly through all aspects of my life without feeling like I was being pulled in several different directions; the group project portion of the course would be the exception. Although I manage my time, it became difficult to schedule when you were relying on or waiting for team members to respond or submit their portion of the assignment. I believe this new experience of working with a group will be of assistance to me when faced with another group assignment. With my renewed understanding that not everyone has the same sense of urgency that I do, I will need to adjust my expectations and learn how to manage better my stress more

What is your team’s approach to completing the project? This project is difficult for anyone to complete in an online class setting such as this. However, this is not because of any task that is assigned for this project, but because this assignment forces us to learn to effectively communicate with each other to complete a common goal. We began communicating early this week regarding what we need to accomplish in order to complete this project, and we have come to a conclusion.…

During this time, the group showed the professor their research project. After she looked at it, she gave the group feedback on what they could do to improve the project. The group conferences were helpful, but I feel like it would have been better to have class so group members could work. Personally, I found it hard to contact members outside of class and find a time to meet that works for everyone. I would have rather spent time in class working on the project together than trying to work outside of class.…

Group work is very different than what I am use to. I am use to working on projects alone and knowing where I stand. I have always been a shy person and have relied on myself for anything I am working on in school. This particular project really brought me out of my comfort zone and showed me it is okay to ask for help. Marvin Wright's Family Literacy Night was different to say the least.…

My overall goal in teaching is to ensure that the class is stimulating, along with the allowance of creativity and allow for peer interaction with the course. I instruct adult learners through distance learning in criminal justice and law enforcement courses. During the courses, I promote peer interaction through allowing learners to educate peers on a topic. For instance, one assignment involves the development of a PowerPoint presentation 15-15 slides on a topic of the learners choosing to educate peers on three things the learner learned while conducting research on the selected subject, in addition to including one thing the learner learned while conducting research on the subject. The learners then respond two peers through the discussion posts in response to the questions posed.…

The purpose of this particular activity was to allow group members who did not know each other the opportunity to work with one another to complete the task of building the tallest free-falling tower in exactly one minute or less. The reason why I believe this task was given to us was to display Tuckman's five stages of group development and to show how these stages are relevant in our lives and not another concept you learn in class that is not applicable in life. As a group, we went through all of Tuckman's stages which will be well explained in the following paragraphs. As mentioned before, nobody in the group knew each other which caused a feeling of awkwardness that soon dispelled as time gradually progressed.…

At the beginning of the semester, we were assigned a team project. At first, the assignment sounded difficult to me because it was just at the beginning of the semester and I did not know my classmates or the team members assigned to my group. With the help of the teachers I was able to meet and get to know my team members by their names, we exchanged our phone numbers and email address to ease communication. In our first meeting, we were able to select the team leader, come up with the rules to govern the team and also plan the times we were going to be holding the team meeting every week. In our second session, we were able to come up with the project, discuss the project then divided and allotted tasks to each member.…

Overall, I was extremely happy with the effort my group put into this project. In terms of attending the group meetings, everyone was present and participated in the discussion. The first meeting took place on a Sunday afternoon at Baruch and the second meeting took place on a weeknight in the form of a Google Hangout. The times and places of these meetings alone displayed every group members’ commitment to the project, effort to accommodate for scheduling conflicts, and effort to ensure they are contributing their fair share to the group regardless the time or day of the week. At these meetings, we discussed ways to engage the crowd and critiqued each other’s slides and presentations.…

Introduction In this reflection, I will focus on some important topics such as, what I learned about individual and business taxation from this course, what was my experience with the group project and what were the challenges that I faced during both the group project and this course. I am also going to add some main overall points that I learned. Tax is generally an amount of money that is charged by a government on a product, income, or activity so that it can pay for public services. In addition, there are several very common types of taxes: • Income Tax (a percentage of individual or corporate earnings filed to the government) • Sales Tax (taxes charged on certain goods and services) • Property Tax (taxes charged on the value of land…
