RTI In Classroom

In a standard classroom there are many different learning styles, and different levels of understanding, as well as many other obstacles that students have to jump through to get to the end prize. What a lot of parents and teachers don’t realize is that each child is different. Each child learns differently and will understand things differently, and yet we are still teaching children as if they are all the same and that there are no differences in the way that each of them learn. This leaves many children asking the question “am I good enough?” Leaving many children with low self-esteem about their education. We as teachers, parents, and people in general, need to stop telling children that there is only one way to learn and to “be good” and …show more content…
One thing that teachers can do is to assess a child and see if they need to use an RTI. This has been proven to be very effective for children according to a study that Maskill (2012) did with her team of researchers. In the study they found that RTI, for the elementary school that they study was observing, only offered RTI for grades 1st-3rd. They found that those students started to perform at grade level and that RTI was able to give them the help that they needed. I think that RTI is an excellent tool for teachers and students to use to help the student improve with their education. Each plan is fit to each individual child to make sure that they get the help and attention that they …show more content…
Gallagher (2016), says that when students have a strong and meaningful connection with their teacher they feel like they can explore the classroom, and use the teacher as a secure base. She goes on to say that the students will feel like they can take on any academic challenge and can work on social-emotional development. I would say that statement is pretty true, at least speaking from personal experience. When I was in high school I had some good connections with teachers and I felt like I could go and ask them questions, not just about school work, but also about life in general. If I had a question about what college should I go to I would go to some teachers and ask for their input, or if I was going through a struggle I would ask for advice. I also felt like I excelled in their class, and in classes where the connection wasn’t as strong I struggled and felt like I couldn’t do it. I would say that students really need a connection with their teachers to be able to do school and to get through

After last week’s writing, I found myself in quite a fog of insecurity. Thankfully the most recent installment of YITE brought me back to the sunny side of teaching philosophy. Reading about the art of teaching was rather inspiring even. The quote from the text, “approaching instruction in a variety of ways to provide multiple paths for students to both learn the content and develop the skills of the curriculum is artistry (pg 147),” caught my attention. Often in my life I have gotten the impression that some people consider the position of a teacher as that of merely a figurehead, an adult to put in front of a group of kids to keep them occupied.…

Response to Intervention (RTI), was introduced in 2004 during the revision of the federal law known as the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA). It was introduced as a method to provide intensive assistance to children who are at risk of a disability and the overidentification of children with specific learning disabilities. The reason for RTI is to prevent children from failing in both academics and behaviors by providing them with research-based instruction, universal screening, and early intervention. RTI has a three-tier model of intervention; the first tier focuses on core curriculum, the second tier focuses on intervention for students in small groups, and lastly, those who continue to have difficulty receive intervention services…

Instead of children in schools seeing challenge as an opportunity, they give up and fold. They have a lack of interest because they are not good at the new material introduced. They have a lack of effort, because the work is no longer easy, so they fail. “The Secret to Raising a smart kids” explains success as challenging one’s full ability, and having an open mind for criticism. If parents praised, but also challenged children,…

For all of my life, building close relationships has been the key to my success. I form relationships successfully in a small, comfortable setting. In school, classrooms are an accessible way for myself to accomplish this with my teacher. For every teacher I was close to, the class I had with them was my top class. One of the main reasons I chose Clarkson College was because I admired it was a private college with a limited student to teacher ratio.…

As I shadowed the counselor at Tucker Middle School for a summer program, I realized that some of the benefits of implementing early intervention and RTI (Response to Intervention) for children with early signs of a learning disability is serious topic. Instead of just placing students in special education programs educators must assess and evaluate students, as well as trying early intervention programs which help delay disabilities or stop the disability from forming or progressing. I’ve always heard a little about the RTI, but one that differed from what I have encountered in the school system is the Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA). This allows a systematic process for gathering information that helps determine the relationship between…

I attended a meeting for RTI that involved, the general education teacher, reading intervention team, RTI coordinator, special education teacher, and a social worker. Before the meeting started I was informed that the parents don’t attend these meetings. The teacher either sends a letter home to the parents or they send an email. This meeting was to go over data that was collected for a group of students that are in the process of receiving an IEP, and possibly becoming part of the special education program.…

The role of the student in the RTI change initiative was very limited. The pupils selected for intervention could not choose whether or not to take these classes. Though test scores were consulted, students, themselves, were not consulted during the planning or implementation of the initiative. Students were merely “potential beneficiaries of change” (Fullan, 2006, p. 170). As beneficiaries, these learners were only to be engaged as recipients of the remediation services being offered to them.…

When we enter into the classroom every day and prepare our lesson plans, we are doing more than just repeating material from a book. We are sharing our personal knowledge with those who will one day control the world. We put a little piece of ourselves in every student we encounter. Whether or not we actually influence them is up to the student. Therefore we must make every possible effort to make a huge impact on their lives each and every…
