Reflection On The Elderly

Improved Essays
I am looking forward to learning many new things this semester. I enjoy learning and look for opportunities to feed my brain. I want to learn as much as I can about the elder so that I can implement these things as a future Gerontologist. As the good old book says in Proverbs 4:7, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” Understanding life and the different situations that arise will make things easier and knowing when there is no understanding for certain things is wisdom. The more I learn, the more I will understand and can relate to the elderly population. I want to learn as much “book work “as possible, but I also know that experience is the mother of all teachers. As I view my self-introductory, …show more content…
The elderly have so much to offer our society. It is so sad that the western culture is so caught up on youth that we miss our opportunity to have wisdom engraved into our culture. I believe our society is suffering because of it and that things are different in countries where the elderly is treated with respect. I believe our view of the elderly must change especially with the increase of elderly population in the near future. We will have older adults working longer and in our society in general and we cannot treat them with an ageist mentality. We must take this opportunity and make it a time where the old will actually teach the young and get back to a place where the elderly is valued and looked upon and wise and knowledgeable instead of old and …show more content…
I was able to see some clarification about certain beliefs that I did not understand or sadly did not take the time to research before. Hearing something from someone else is very different from doing your own research. I realize that many people are religious, but not spiritual. If we do not take our religion to a spiritual level, we are just following traditions and routines and we will never get to know God on a deeper level. As the bible say in Matthew 15:8, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” Jesus was answering their questions and he told them they were too busy honoring human rules because the commandments said to honor your father and mother but they said it was okay not to honor their father and mother as long as what they were going to give their mother and father was given to God

Discussing adults aged 65+, it discussed the growing average life expectancy, challenges that seniors face, and dying. The life expectancy is becoming longer and longer due to medical advances, but the effects of aging are inevitable. A decline in sensory and motor abilities, bone density, muscle mass, skin elasticity, senses become less acute. In short, as our bodies age they decay and lose abilities and properties they once had. Some of the challenges senior citizens face are the risk of Alzheimer (a disease that causes the death of brain tissue), losing their sense of meaning, sexual/arousal issues, and depression, just to name a few.…

Describe Your Feelings and Beliefs on Aging in the United States Looking back from the time I started my nursing career to the present, I have seen how the image of the older adults has evolved from “the stereotypical views and images associated with ageing” (Grant, 2001, p. 777), to a more positive regard of the older population. In addition, Healthy People (HP) 2020’s focus on “maintaining the quality of life and wellness of older adults” (HP 2020, 2015) has set new targets for nursing education. Nursing faculty are urged to “integrate older adult content throughout nursing programmes to enhance nursing practice with an ageing population” (Baumbusch, Dahlke, & Phinney, 2012, p. 2550).…

She spoke about how there is a type of persistence in the American culture. In our society, there are a lot of prejudices against older people and this actually affects everyone: no matter the race, gender, or sexuality. It might not affect the younger generation right now but if not taken control of right now it will affect us if we get to an older age.…

“A society for all ages is multigenerational. It is not fragmented, with youths, adults and older persons going their separate ways. Rather, it is age-inclusive, with different generations recognizing—and acting upon—their commonality of interest. And a society for all ages is committed to creating an enabling environment for healthy life-styles as people age.” ("A ‘Society for All Ages’ Honours Traditional Leadership Role of…

If African American informal elder caregivers are marginalized, invisible and insignificant to formal eldercare and healthcare providers, will they self-identify as caregivers and advocate and leaders for their care recipients, or become proficient in their roles as elder caregivers? Informal elder caregivers have been referred to as secondary patients due to their need for protection and guidance, according to Reinhard, Given, Petlick, and Bernis (2008). Therefore, when health care providers who have the resources and training to assist African American informal elder caregivers, choose not to acknowledge their existence, this may contribute to healthcare disparities not only for their care recipients, but the elder caregiver as well. Similarly,…

Aging is a beautiful challenging unique process that we have the privilege of tackling in each of our lives. For some it may be an easy planned out progression without many bumps in the road, but for most it is an ever changing journey that makes us who we are today. Aging doesn’t always ask us what we want or what we planned on doing with our time, but instead gives us experiences, good and bad, that make up our lives. What better way to understand being an adult and the aging process than to ask people who are right in the middle of it! Because different people with different ages have different experiences, I interviewed a 20 year old, a 58 year old and a 67 year old and asked about their aging experiences.…

Most seniors are mentally and physically active regardless of age with great contributions to society. Societal norms marginalize seniors, treat them with disrespect, and make them feel unwelcome. With the onsets of ageism, seniors are robbed of choice, independence, and dignity. Being a part of the younger generation one must embrace our elders and show them the respect they deserve and welcome them as a part of society. We may be young, but our families are aging, and one day we will be put in a position of ageism.…
