Based on what I’ve learned in this chapter, these results put me in the learning patterns combination category as a “Strong-Willed Learner." A lot of the tendencies associated with each pattern resonated with me as something I’ve recognized in myself at some time. I like to be right and I like correct information. My fiancé considers himself a well of information, and he likes to vocalize that information without fact-checking it first. He was telling my brother, Alex, and best friend, John, a story about these dolls that were supposedly mysteriously hung in a forest and that no one knew where they came from. This story spurred from an image in my copy of the Guinness Book of World Records. As he was talking, I read the paragraph beside the picture, stopped him, and clarified the situation. I stated the factual reasons the dolls were brought and left there, and my fiancé was visibly embarrassed. I’m not completely uncomfortable with risk-taking and thinking outside the box, but I can definitely tell that it’s harder for me than the other patterns. I used to write poetry for a literary magazine at my previous college. An English teacher from grade school who gave me a particularly hard time also wrote for the magazine. The magazine held an award ceremony, and there were prizes to be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places, as well as honorable mentions. Both the teachers and the students could compete for these, and a panel of English professors and students did the judging. To win this I had to think creatively and take a risk by writing something different than I’d written before. I got away from rhyme and my typical structure, and wrote something totally left field for me. I ended up winning first place in poetry that year, over that dreaded English teacher from my past (who won
