Promoting Social Justice

With all the problems and disparities in today’s society, promoting social justice is more important than ever. As community leaders try to fill the world with love, peace, and solidarity, education will be an important stepping stone in facilitating this process. As part of my service learning experience, I worked to promote the learning and development of young students at the Felician College Child Care Center located on Felician University’s Lodi Campus. The Felician College Child Care Center, founded in 1987, consists of Felician Sisters and lay teachers who uphold many of the principles of Catholic Social Teaching. Their philosophy is that each child ought to be treated as a unique individual because each one of us is a distinct …show more content…
Just as “God reveals himself…as one who is relational” the students “made in God’s image share[d] this communal, social nature” (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 1998). For the most part, I found the climate of the classroom to be very accepting and friendly. During playtime, the students would typically get along and play in groups that would vary depending on the day and activity. Although there were instances where a student did not want to share their toys, they almost always listened with either myself or a teacher told them to play nicely. During arts and crafts time when the students were divided into two separate groups, the students would share their artwork with one another and the class would applaud them for their performance. When a student’s parent came to pick them up at the end of the day, their peers would say good-bye to them and give them hugs before leaving. Ultimately, I found the child care center to foster an environment that was supportive and exemplary of what our world should strive to …show more content…
My experiences with the students at the child care center reminded me when Dennis et al. (2015) says “the only thing that remains and is priceless in our eyes is the patience and friendship this or that comrade shows you. Such an act by someone who, like yourself, is immersed in suffering and anxiety, is a ray of light that falls miraculously into the wretched darkness that envelops us. It re-creates you, makes you a human being once again” (p. 142). When interacting with these students, I was amazed by how quickly they accepted me into their class. After just my second visit to the child care center, I was welcomed back by the students and invited to participate in whatever activities they were engaged in. Also during my subsequent visits, several of the students would say good-bye to me when I had to leave and would ask when I would be back. I quickly felt as if I became part of the community and accepted for who I was. Additionally, with all the responsibilities I am obliged to, I felt as if my time with these students allowed me to slow down, forget about what’s stressing me out, and enjoy the small things in life. In fact, I had such a great experience working with these students that I continued to volunteer for the child care center beyond the completion of my service. While I am no longer volunteering there due to other obligations that

Introduction Social Justice is the practice of opposing forces of prejudice, discrimination, and classism in our everyday lives. Social justice means that there is an inequality between groups due to one group being unfairly advantaged over the other, and that this should be corrected so that each social group in society has the same opportunities and same lack of oppression as each other group. In practice, people only see their own oppression while using labels of social justice as an excuse to oppress others. The ideal social justice practice seeks to repair group inequalities by rising up the disadvantaged and removing barriers that hold them back. I agree with Mullaly’s (2007) concept of consciousness-raising through which awareness of…

“As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest.” According to Nelson Mandela, we should all be restless until everyone is equal. During the past semester, I have strived to help impoverished students receive an education equal to the education given to children in private schools. As a result, I have acquired an expansive knowledge regarding injustice and have grown as a person. For my service work this semester, I volunteered at Kellom Elementary.…

Until recently this summer, I was sadly never a really involved member of the social justice movement. This is due to only one major reason; that all the clubs and organizations I was ever exposed to, never focused on the importance of change. I constantly heard "what wasn't right", "what wasn't fair", and "what was wrong". But never did I hear anyone speak on how to change the situation. So that became my question.…

This experience made me realize that if I do not educate myself professionally in child life, then I will not even be able to support the people closest to me. After this experience, I became more passionate about providing support for children and families in difficult situations, especially the hospital setting. I believe that children’s development and learning should be supported and encouraged regardless of situation, culture, race, religion, gender, age, and socioeconomic status. Child life…

Working at WINGS for kids, Incorporated has been my most relevant experience that has allowed me to teach children from low-income communities. WINGS for kids, Incorporated was a program that compromised a social and emotional learning curriculum in a fun after-school program. I had the opportunity to lead a group of twelve girls on the fifth grade level. I committed a full year of service to help teach social and emotional learning skills to these girls who all were from low-income communities. The girls all successfully completed the program and went on to middle school.…

Environmental justice has advocated and made visible the practice of disproportional siting hazardous waste facilities in low income communities of color throughout the United States. Most of the time the state corporate actors are the ones responsible they are the ones who decide where to place the hazardous waste; the state corporate is more concern with where to place the hazardous waste rather than the health and safety of the community, people and their environment. In 1987 a report was released Toxic Waste and Race by the United Church of Christ Commission on Racial Justice (UCCRJ); the study demonstrated that hazardous waste sites were disproportionately located in low income communities where the residents were colored people. Then…

According to Chapin social justice refers to the equitable distribution of societal resources to all in reference to social, economic, and political spheres. When I look at the eligibility rules I would agree that these requirements do address this definition of social justice. When it comes to fairness all states are giving the same basic requirement rules to obtain the initial base pay. Each year the CAPTA is evolving to answer all economic, political, and social spheres that are constantly changing in each state as the population changes (Chapin, 2014, p.…

Recently, social media have become more and more popular and draw not only companies attention and participation but also researchers to investigate the mechanism and motivation behind it (Rishika and Kumar 2013). The vital value in social media is to allow users to create and share information through user-generated content (UGC) within online social networks (Tang et al. 2012). Many social media develop various functions to become attractive platforms to users, especially content creators (Dallas et al. 2012). In order to encourage UGC, some social media in China provide a new function—dashang—that allows user or the audience to give monetary or non-monetary rewards to content creators voluntary based on the knowledge and service provided…

Introduction One can scarcely go through a day without coming into contact with some issue of social justice. Newspapers, television, and the internet seem to be constantly abuzz with the latest stories of injustice, racism, or the occasional story of socio-economic barriers that are finally crossed. As the Race Together campaign at Starbucks proves, a person cannot even get their morning cup of coffee without being confronted with such issues. It should come as no surprise then that if the whole world cares about such morally and ethically charged issues the church should also be so invested. In many ways, social justice is concerned with the ways in which two or more parties with characteristics whether it is race, economic position, sexual…
