In the new academic year of September 2015, Northumbria University will be accepting a group of new national and international students pursuing a top-up degree course. The purpose of this report is to inform them on the importance of learning agility, why they should adopt it and how it can be used to a student’s advantage.
Definitions of Learning Agility
Oxford dictionary defines ‘learning’ as “Knowledge acquired through study, experience, or being taught” (Oxford University Press, 2015), whereas ‘agility’ is defined as “Ability to move quickly and easily” (Oxford University Press, 2015). However, ‘learning agility’ as a phrase has never been definitively defined, but only discussed in literature.

This is seen in the healthcare industry report (Suzanne Miklos, et al., n.d.) which conducted a research on a sample size of 23 medical practitioners. This report proved that using learning agility factors, they were able to predict employees’ performance accurately, despite being in many different scenarios. Since in Northumbria University, we aim to foster our students to be well known for their “leadership capability” (Anon., 2014), we hope to cultivate this professional skill in every one of our students.
How do you change to incorporate Learning Agility?
Cavanaugh & Zelin, 2012, concluded that some characteristics of learning agility are not altered easily as it rooted in a person 's character naturally, after all, technically, you have to improve the scores for accessing Learning agility using the 4 factors stated in the segment: ‘How do we measure Learning Agility?’.
However, NICSA (Robbi-Arena, 2013) still compiled 10 recommendations which briefly summarized as follows: be an active learner and be reading constantly; Take calculated risk to get out of your comfort zone; Think from other standpoints with an open mind and providing acknowledgement to others; Be prepared to forfeit your own benefits for tough situations and be open about yourself and to others.
Harvard Business Review weighs in on this subject by suggesting that one can be a Learning agility “enabler” (J.P & Winkler, 2015) by being more unreserved, determined, and imaginative and be quick to recover. Avoid being narrow minded and being too comfortable towards the status quo.
