First the students must understand the basics involved with Turnitin. As previously mentioned, for many students this is their first exposure to the program and some students are just now continuing their academic pursuits which adds on to the frustration. With consideration to these learners the first activity will revolve around a made interactive tutorial focused on laying down the basics for students on what Turnitin is, what it’s supposed to achieve, how to use it and what to look for in regard citation errors. This tutorial will be found within a Capella unit study section for students to click on. For an assignment students will be asked to take a previous assignment and run it through Turnitin. With the report they receive students will be asked to write an essay of what was properly cited, what wasn’t (if any), and how to properly use Turnitin with their example. The use of a previous assignment is for “ease” for the student due to understanding the content they’ve already written and applied before. This is with understanding that results will vary, some assignments will have considerable citation errors while others will have little if any. This is intentional, as Turnitin results will also be different from paper to paper. More so, this is to prevent students from simply acquiring answers off of other students regarding the content or results. Once the assignment has been submitted the instructor will read over both report and essay to determine if adequate understanding of Turnitin use has been achieved.
Conclusion
Plagiarism in this new age of technology is a major concern. When any and all information is at someone’s finger tips there is a real concern that others will simply take another’s work. Through the use of Turnitin e-learning and standard course rooms can make sure students are providing their own work.
