November 21st, 2014 Learning about Ammonia The chemical that I researched was Ammonia because of it’s involvement in agriculture. I am interested in agriculture and plan on majoring in Animal Science. Ammonia is an ingredient in many of the products that I use when working with animals and this made me curious. I used this opportunity to learn more about this chemical that is important in future career.
Some general information about Ammonia is the chemical formula, molecular weight, availability, characteristics and health concerns. The chemical formula is three hydrogen and one nitrogen ("Ammonia."). The molecular weight is 17.0305 grams per mole. Also, it can be produced commercially and in nature ("Ammonia."). Ammonia has a few distinctive characteristics such as it has a sharp odor, usually clear and most commonly found in liquid form. There is many health concerns with using this chemical because it is considered corrosive. It is also dangerous to inhale, ingest or have any contact with ("The Facts About Ammonia."). Low exposure to this chemical does not cause any problems because it is found in nature commonly. When a person is exposed in high amounts to this chemical, it causes the nose and skin to burn. Ammonia is used the sanitation industry. In the sanitation industry, it is used specifically in cleaning products in order to clean germs and bacteria. Another industry that this chemical is used in is the agriculture industry. Ammonia is used to make fertilizer in order to make crops more effective by increasing the amount of nitrogen available for the plants.
