The song begins with the line “Been a prisoner of the past”, which shows that the speaker, who is implied to be Kesha herself, has gone through hardship in the past. The use of the word “prisoner” is especially powerful; it gives a sense of memories and or people from the past trapping her and keeping her from moving on and living in the present.
