I never intended to be an illegal smuggler. Seriously. But when four-year-old me found out that preschool had "naptimes" (in which apparently nobody napped, making it a waste of time to me), I decided to take matters into my own hands, with drastic measures. At 1:30, while everyone else did whatever preschoolers do during naptime, the book snuck out of its carefully concealed hiding place and I disappeared into its pages.…

As soon as a person turns five years old they are expected to go to school and stay in school until they have obtained a degree; in fact, in the state of California, kids are required to attend school up until high school. However, education is not a requirement in all parts of the world, like developing countries for example, therefore it may be harder for people in that situation to become literate. In Frederick Douglass’ “Learning to Read and Write” and Sherman Alexie’s “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me,” both authors share the process through which they became literate. Because of the color of their skin and the times in which they lived in, becoming literate was not an easy task.…

When I Learned to Read and Write. I first started reading and writing in preschool, my teacher was very helpful and did everything she could do to help me achieve goals, and become who I am today. When I was younger I would pretend that I could read and I would read to all of my toys. In preschool, my teacher saw me trying to read so she came over to me and started to help me sound out the words and form the sentences so that I could read. The first book I read was Dr.Seuss’ “Green, Eggs and Ham.”…

Of everything related to comprehension that was covered in class, I found close reading and text complexity to be the most important. Close reading essentially is comprehension, as it requires a complete understanding of the text. By rereading multiple times and breaking down individual sections of the text, the reader is able to gain increased comprehension than he or she would have otherwise. I have also reviewed my previous reflections in order to evaluate how to best correct my common mistakes in writing. After seeking out and making corrections in my citations, I feel confident that I have a decent grasp on APA formatting.…

Furthermore, the means by which an individual improves their reading capabilities change over time as well. In the same way, I initially improved my reading ability and changed my interests through the help of my parents, then later my teachers, and finally, in spite of a dark period of little improvement, through my own effort.…
