While I was born in Gulfport, Mississippi, I never really had a home town. The first place I remember living was Istanbul, Turkey. It was amazing to experience so many cultures, not only in different countries, but in all the states where we were stationed. I learned quickly that you could bring out the best or the worst in people depending on how you reacted to their beliefs and cultures. I also learned to observe each new place and the people in it, who was accepted, who wasn’t and why. My family and my company are my life. Starting my own company was a dream I had just like the dream I had about meeting my husband when I was living in France. After four years of dating long distance–in France, in the U.S. and in Australia, I somehow managed to convince Jean-Paul to move to the states. I made a bet with him that if he gave the states two years, I would move anywhere with him because I had already lived on four continents. 28 years later we are still here in Northern Virginia, with two beautiful grown daughters. I made the same bet about starting a company–just see if I could start one and last for two years. Now we’re celebrating 20 years in business. Work/life balance was a struggle in the beginning until I stopped trying to live by other people’s definition of balance and created my own, with my husband, our daughters and my company.
