Six Sigma to Lean or Not to Lean: Is That the Question?
What are the similarities and differences between Six Sigma and the Lean Six Sigma? Using examples of companies’ implementation of the Six Sigma or the Lean Six Sigma, we look to demonstrate both the commonality and divergent elements of each approach. The result is best analyzed to review to define, compare, and contrast the Six Sigma and the Lean Six Sigma methodologies.
Six Sigma Approach Six Sigma’s concentrations are a complex and focused, giving depth of knowledge of the situation (R. Shah & A. Deshpande, 2016). This method is team based (Sessoms, 2017)and each diverse perspective the definition for Six Sigma can differ (Schroeder, Linderman, Liedtke, & Choo, 2008). Stark Logistical Process Company (SLPC) is a company that has over 2000 locations, employs hundreds of thousands of workers and is a multi-billion-dollar company (Burch V et al., 2016). It is a large organization that must rely on some sort of complex system to track and manage all current product movement within the system. SLPC went lean because they needed a culture change that would emphasize on an increase in quality and tasks that would add value (Burch V et al., 2016).
Comparison and Contrast
There are some differences between Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma as far as practices and adaptation. Some perceptions of Lean Six Sigma are that it is a condensed and less costly version of Six Sigma, it is Six Sigma on a fast track, and it is Six Sigma combined with lean tools for better results (Gershon & Rajashekharaiah, 2011).
