East Side High Review Lean on Me is a movie about young people growing up in a community that has many different challenges such as: gangs, moral poverty, an environment subject to criminal activity, and drugs. These influences are seen throughout the movie many times and Mr. Clark, the principle and hero of the school, must conform the students at East Side High to overcome these issues and come together to be educated students and pass their minimum basic skills test. Clark made the students feel like they were in an actual school instead of a rundown warehouse. He appointed the janitor and some students on detention to repaint all the walls of the school which were covered by graffiti and gang markings. By doing so, the visuals of the school changed greatly and made the students and the viewer recognize the vibrancy that the school once emanated. He also chained the school’s side doors to keep outside influences – such as drug dealers and gang affiliates -- from getting in. This made the students feel safer. However, this was also a crime as the New Jersey fire department did not permit this and was against the fire code in case there was ever a fire. Mr. Clark became the positive authority that most of the students needed. To some, he was seen as a second father. One of the female students was having a tough time at home; her mother wouldn’t allow her to live at home. Mr. Clark and an associate went to her mother’s house to work things out. Eventually they came to an agreement and the student was allowed back into her home. This form of moral poverty is very commonly seen in the students and Mr. Clark was able to be their symbol of hope and
