League Of Legends: Argument Or Toxic Community?

With over 27 million daily players and 67 million monthly players as of 2014, the MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game, League of Legends, is a growing influence on many gamers around the world (Riot Games). Despite the huge number of player diversity, this popular computer game has earned a reputation for a “toxic” community; that is, its players are known for their negative comments that can induce a feeling of anger, tension, and/or annoyance in other players. That being said, why are these players so antagonistic? Does the reputation that the League of Legends community has earned fairly represent the entire community as a whole? Surely there cannot be 67 million toxic players if the game is so widely popular.

However, in the game, when a player dies, there is a chance that their teammates may disapprove of their death, calling them “unskilled” or discourage them from wanting to play the game. This results in a shift of attitude of both the victim and the disapproving player and can result in a roaring argument that may even involve both teams. This leads to another flaw in the system of League of Legends. The game permits players to chat with not only players from their team but also those from the other team. This can cause situations such as bullying or taunting which results in a negative environment. League of Legends has a ranking system based on players’ performance, and as a result, having a lower rank may also cause players to become a victim of the “unskilled” bullying situation, and these experiences affect more than just the player’s online
