The First Source reviewed was an article from the website Education.com called Leaf Chromatography by Beth Touchette. In the Article Leaf Chromatography Beth Touchette discusses the “how to’s” on the project itself and important facts on Leaf Chromatography. First, this article explores photosynthesis and the pigments such as chlorophyll, carotenoid, and anthocyanin and explains their colors and properties. The reading also includes such advice on what to do during project like always check the filter paper every minute or so or instead use coffee filter paper for the project. In addition, the article analyzes Leaf Chromatography in a way that they explain the project and the effects of it like the experiment itself or Chromatography in general.

Interactive Question 7.2 Cite some experimental evidence that indicates that membrane proteins drift. A good form of experimental evidence is Fluorescence Recovery After Photobleaching, aka FRAP. In the FRAP process, membrane proteins are labelled with a green fluorescent protein, and part of the plasma membrane is “bleached” with a laser, causing them to lose their fluorescence. The part that was bleached will eventually become fluorescent again, as molecules drift in by diffusion.…

RESULTS: An experiment was conducted to document the patterns of evolution in the fictional species, Cannus stannous. Fitness of the C. stannous population is determined solely by its ability to retain heat. Three genes determined heat retention; can size, skin type, and water level. Each gene had three alleles, producing 27 possible phenotypic combinations (Table 1).…

The 5,000 ppm appeared to have no lateral bud growth and therefore all ranked equally. The last table shows the relationship between the 500 ppm and 5,000 ppm treatments of auxin. It appeared that the bud with the 500 pm showed significantly more lateral bud growth compared to the 5,000 ppm treatment of lanolin The average of the bud growth was recorded in each table and ranks recorded.…

Furthermore, the mixture is shaken until two separate layers of liquids are observed. On the top was the organic layer and bottom the aqueous layer. The aqueous layer is discarded while, the organic layer is kept, which will produce our products for this experiment. The organic layer then is transferred to a dry 50-ml Erlenmeyer flask and then dried with calcium chloride. The mixture is occasionally swirled for 2-3 minutes and then decanting the organic mixture into a dry 50-ml distilling flask.…

A balance was used to find the wet weight and a ruler was used to find the length and width of the leaves, the height of the shoot, and the length of roots. The plants were positioned in their correct number bag. Petri dishes were labeled L 1-15 and the diameter of the dishes was recorded. The Lemna sp. was spun in the salad spinner ten times.…

In this study, the effects of both varying temperatures and light intensity upon the photosynthetic rate of spinach leaves were observed. Using the ‘spinach immersion’ technique, the rate of photosynthesis under various conditions was quantified by observing the amount of spinach floating on top of a sodium bicarbonate solution. The sodium bicarbonate solution simultaneously supplied the spinach with carbon dioxide for use in photosynthesis, and caused it to sink. When the leaf underwent photosynthesis and produced oxygen gas, the leaf floated to the surface. It was hypothesized that an increase of either temperature or light intensity would lead to an increased rate of photosynthesis, to a degree.…

Method Bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris) were provided by the instructor for the experiment at Mount Royal University. There were four or more bean plants in each of the four pots. The first task was to choose the best three plants in each pot based on whether they had two big healthy leaves and so the three plants looked relatively similar. The excess plants were cut out so that each of the four pots contained three plants, making a total of twelve plants. Each of the four represented a different treatment that occurred to the three bean plants in that pot.…

Quantitative measurements such as: the width of both the radicle and hypocotyl, the length of both the radicle and hypocotyl, and how many seeds have sprouted on each day are taken throughout the germination. In each petri dish, there will be a grid of the measuring paper to record both width and length. Qualitative measurements such as the quality (how strong the radicle and hypocotyl looks compared to the control) and color of both will be measured to help support the quantitative results. To begin the experiment, the solutions must be made in order to have the levels of treatment. There will be three levels of treatments, and a control.…

The eluent is the solvent, which carries the materials to be separated through the adsorbent. After being separated we can calculate the Rate of flow, which is generally known as Rate Values, meaning the distance traveled along the chromatography paper. Each color has its own rate of flow so having a rate of flow can help identify the color easier. Introduction: Chromatography is one of the useful methods of separating and purifying organic compounds. CHromatography works on the concept that the compounds to be separated are slightly soluble in the eluent and will spend some of the time in the eluent (or solvent) and some of the time on the adsorbent.…

The two stages of photosynthesis are the light reactions that occur in the former and the light-independent or “synthesis” reactions occurring in the latter (Stegenga, 2015). The absorption of solar energy or light occurs in the light reactions, while the “synthesis” reactions leads to formation of carbohydrates from carbon dioxide in a process known as the Calvin cycle (Stegenga, 2015). This experiment of determining the rate of photosynthesis in the chloroplasts of spinach leaves utilizes the findings of the Hill…
