Suicide is the 10th leading causes of death, it is estimated that 42,773 Americans each year commit suicide; suicide is common in white middle-age males. At an average there is about 117 suicides per day. In North Carolina, suicide is the 11th leading cause of death, and every seven hours a person commits suicide. Jeannette Walls, a well-known writer, once said, "When people kill themselves, they think they're ending the pain, but all they're doing is passing it on to those they leave behind." This quote has been posted on social media in hopes that it will help someone keep going. Also keep in mind that there are a lot of triggers that makes a person consider suicide. One of the first warning sign is if a person starts talking about killing themselves or wanting to die. Secondly, searching for ways to harm themselves, but also buying equipment that will allow them to take their life. Third, if the person keeps saying that they have no reason to live or if they talk about feeling hopeless. Fourth, talking about how they feel like a burden to the people around them. Fifth, becoming very isolated from the ones that they love or friends. Sixth, the person starting to use drugs, alcohol or becoming reckless. Seventh, having severe mood swings, which can lead to affecting others around them. Eighth, speaking of unbearable pain or stating that they feel like they're trapped in their mind, and they can't seem to figure out how to get out. Ninth, their sleeping schedule has changed, which means if it either increases or decreased. Tenth, if the person feels that they have no future. Finally, if the person is self-harming, it is estimated that "between 2007 and 2013, 333 children aged 4-17 years died due to intentional self-harm (64% male; 20% Aboriginal)" (Are there warning signs for suicide?. There is a hotline for suicide which is 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433) it's a 24/7 hotline (Treatment Advocacy Center). People with any kind of problem can seek help from a therapist, which helps them reconsider the attempt of committing suicide. But as well the therapist can help them get help for any mental illness that the person may have that had lead them to consider suicide. Taking medication can help with a mental illness that the person may have, so it can help them recover some of their peace of mind. Another prevention is having a person talk to them, so it can keep the thought of suicide from crossing their minds. Telling a person that they are worth, that they are loved, that they are needed, that they aren’t a burden, and that they will be missed; this is important to say to a person that is suicidal because they feel like they are alone in this world and have no reason to live.
