Untreated depression is the number one cause for suicide. Untreated mental illness (including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and others) is the cause for the vast majority of suicides. It is very rare that someone dies by suicide because of one cause. Thus, there are usually several causes, and not just one, for suicide. Many people die by suicide because depression is triggered by several negative life experiences, and the person does not receive treatment or does not receive effective treatment for the depression. This reflects the many individual, interpersonal, and environmental factors that increase vulnerability to suicide. A variety of factors also contribute to strengthening resilience. Having gone into detail with suicide information, it is quite important that we try and put a stop to this. Due to the amount of factors that can contribute to suicide, an approach towards the matter is quite broad. There are many awareness programs and interventions created for a general audience ("Preventing Suicide"). Just because a suicidal person does not ask for help, it does not mean help is not wanted. As explained in my intro psychology class most people who commit suicide don't want to die just want the pain to go away (Davis-Brantley). It is essential that people recognize the warning signs and taking them seriously in order to help. It is understandable that bringing up the subject might be quite uncomfortable but just by talking openly might save the life of your friend or family member. Remember suicide is a desperate attempt to end an unbearable feeling. Blinded by feelings of self-loathing, loneliness, and hopelessness can deal someone who beliefs there is no solution but death. Most suicide people try to find a solution because they do not want to end their life, but at the long run they conclude that death will be the easier way to stop pain and end their
