There is no manual or procedure on how to be a good community adviser. I have learned that becoming a good community adviser is something that one can only learn from experience and mistakes. However, I know firsthand how challenging it can be to not put oneself down because of one’s mistake. Therefore, as a third year community adviser, one of my top goals is to show my colleague, peers, and residents that making mistakes is a part of learning and growing. I want to show them that it’s important to reflect on our mistakes, take ownership of it, learn from it, and not put ourselves down because of it.
Furthermore, I feel that as a new community adviser it can be a bit hard to ask for help without thinking that others may think of you as incompetent. Furthermore, I feel that we as humans have not truly perfected language and communication. Therefore, we all have many different ways of saying the same meaning and certain things may be interpreted differently by certain identities that we have or certain experiences that we have. Therefore, when a conflict does arise, my first step is to understand the conflict, then to get a good grasp of what the others parties truly mean to say or do. Then I will have a dialogue about the conflict with everyone involve because I feel that for there to be a true understanding it is important to all parties involve have a dialogue about the problem.
