Leadership is a trait of possessing the ability to guide a group or organization to achieve visions or goals set by the members. Although leadership can seem easy to understand, it incorporates various attributes and interpretations for the methods, types, and examples of leadership. In order to effectively lead a group of people, some may implement fear and power. On the other hand, some may lead with cooperation and collaboration. As both types of leadership contain varying advantages, authoritative leadership can be effective in some circumstances, however, for the most part, collaborative leadership is the strongest way to lead. Without such restrictions, there would be chaos and imbalance. According to an excerpt from The Prince, author Niccolo Machiavelli claims “it is much safer to be feared than loved… baseness of men, is broken at every opportunity for their advantage; but fear preserves you by a dread of punishment which never fails.” (Machiavelli, Source B). In this source, Machiavelli states that a leader should be strong and strict due to the low morals of men. Due to the immorality men possess, Machiavelli claims that people will turn against their loved ones in order to gain benefits of their own. As a result, for a leader to be able to contain a group’s following and obedience, an authoritative approach is necessary. Likewise, a leader must be able to possess power and responsibility above all due to possibilities of crisis such as war. Machiavelli portrays this point through the quote in The Prince, “But when a prince is with his army, and has under control a multitude of soldiers, then it is quite necessary for him to disregard the reputation of cruelty, for without it he would never hold his army united or disposed to its duties.” (Machiavelli Source B). All which we pine for now.” (Shakespeare 3.6: 34-36), this portrays that Macbeth’s people are far from content with his ruling.
