Trust grows incrementally for nursing teams. Clinical competencies, professional standards, and well defined roles creates a starting point and expectations for a team. Nursing teams that work towards a common goal such as improved patient outcomes build trust more rapidly since expectations are well established (Renia et al., 2007). The impact of developing relationships that inspire trust on a team cannot be discounted. Team members that have unclear role expectations or feel disrespected on a team will slowly erode trust. Poor team relationships make it difficult to communicate, which is the cornerstone of collaboration.
