I had conducted an enjoyable and valuable interview with a leader that I admire through his leadership style. He is an effective leader in the company that I work for, which is one of the top 50 international corporations in the telecommunication industry. He is successful in his job, therefore, I decided to interview him to learn useful knowledge and practices. We contacted via Skype for half an hour, and we covered the following: what motivates him; how he became an effective leader; what are some good leadership practices; and how he could reach the success.

He mentioned that the main point is that the leader ought to be aware of his role in details and understand what he supposed to do, what are the limitations and how to come over obstacles. He described that the leader should know the current status of the work and ask external evaluators such as different departments in the same company to evaluate the progress of his leadership. Additional to usual leader’s duties, the leader need to be smart on request needed information in order to make right decisions. Sometimes, the leader requests unnecessary information which might lead to inappropriate decisions. First, since no one will be eager to complete tasks and projects more than the leader himself, leader should constantly follow up on everything that he is working on to avoid any delays. Second, leader is required to give his employees instructions in details of any project or tasks in order to avoid any struggling to meet performance goals. He considers providing half of information or non-comprehensive structure is a waste of time for both of them. Another lesson he learned is that organizing always led to the best, therefore, he recommends leaders to write to-do-list in details because depending on the memory could be a disaster sometimes. As an example, when the leader’s finalization of work is contingent on the work of others, the leader should follow up with them to make sure that the work will be done on time.
In the last part of the interview, I asked him about the factors that have led to his most success. He summarized his answer into four main factors. The first factor is having a clear goals and objectives would help employees in their job and also help to develop the work. Then, having an inclusive plan on how to reach the goals and objectives. The leader also needs to have a vision on how to execute the plan, and finally having a measurement method to ensure meeting the objective as planned.
