The Nurse Leader Interview
According to “Leadership roles and Management Functions in Nursing” written by Bessie Marquis and Carol Huston, management is defined as the process of leading and directing an organization through the arrangement and handling of resources. Roles such as managing, handling, supervision, and control fall appropriately under the description of management. The term manager and leader are often used interchangeably, but there are differences between the roles of these two. Leaders do not have delegated authority, while managers have a source of power due to the ability to delegate. Managers hold duties and responsibilities to carry out specific

According to Marquis and Huston, a democratic leadership is usually best for an environment where extended hours are spent. As well as the promotion of autonomy and the growth of individual workers in the setting. Cooperation and coordination between all groups are essential in an effective leadership. The work flow of all of the staff works smoothly due to the allowance of autonomy of the individuals on the floor. It works well with this unit because everyone cooperates and work well with each other to achieve a positive outcome. In addition, Angela also makes rounds on the floor and offers any assistance to the other nursing staff if they are in need of an extra hand. As a manager, staffing falls under her responsibility. She also is in charge of making the schedule for all of the nursing staff. I would say that Angela is a transformational leader, in which she shows commitment and empowers others with the vision she has. “Transformational leadership can facilitate change, encourage innovation and creativity, and result in more successful, cohesive clinical units” (Marquis & Huston, 2011). There are four factors that are included in transformational leadership. This includes: idealized influence, inspirational motivation, individualized consideration, and intellectual stimulation.
All in all, my interview with Angela had given me an opportunity to see what an ideal manager should be like in a hospital setting. Her management skills clearly shows to be properly functioning since everyone in her unit seem to be working well together as a team, with little to no complications. Everyone is comfortable working with each other and the environment is occupied with nothing but happy and healthy workers. Having an exceptional manager in a unit greatly assists in creating a setting that promotes a positive, memorable customer experience in this

Cite professional literature supporting your position on the following: Define the Charge nurse’s leadership style: The Nurse Manager’s leadership style is Shared (democratic) Leadership, but it is also laissez-faire. I believe that these leadership styles are most like hers because she empowers the staff to be decision makers while dispersing decision making throughout the group.
