Drumline Movie Analysis

When first asked about the interaction between leader characteristics, follower characteristics and situational factors, I immediately thought about the popular movie drumline. This movie involved a character that is a drummer(Devon) a leader of the drumline(Sean) and the band director (Dr. Lee). The drummer is very talented and is given a full ride scholarship to college as a result. The band director is “old school” and set in his ways, and has a good follower in the leader of his drumline, Sean. Devon changes from high school leader to college follower. He struggles as a follower because of his arrogance and crave for the spotlight. Throughout the movie he is at odds with his leaders. Sean the leader of the drumline struggles also with his role because he now has someone that challenges his authority and is rebellious. …show more content…
It shows how a leader like Sean with directive behaviors style of leadership had to adapt to the situation and become a more supportive leader and develop the skills of his follower Devon. the follower characteristics include Devon, first voicing his opinion about his dislike for the program, and secondly, although unorthodox, he offered suggestion to improve it. The band director ultimately listened to his followers and incorporated their ideas in to the program. the author of Art of followership. Leadership Excellence, Warren Bennis, believes followers voicing their opinion and leaders listening, is key factors to leader -follower effectiveness.
