PBL Group Reflection

Superior Essays
During my time here at Maryville I have found that I have a difficult time assuming a leadership role when I’m in a group with other individuals who have stronger/dominant personalities. Last year in my PBL group we each took turns being a leader for a week throughout the PBL group process. One of my strengths as a leader is that I’m open to hearing thoughts or opinions that are different than my own and the groups. So during this PBL session we started off by everyone sharing their intervention ideas. The group was discussing which intervention would be best and I noticed four of the members with stronger personalities were pushing for their interventions and that the two more reserved members weren’t in agreement based off of their nonverbal …show more content…
How did you use that feedback to modify future interactions?
- Discuss who or what has facilitated and/or hindered the development of your leadership skills.

I have been given feedback by my coaches, and some of my PBL instructors that I need to be more confident in my skills. Confidence is something that I feel will always be a work in progress for me as a leader. I have tried to be more confident when pitching ideas, assigning group roles, and giving/receiving feedback but there is still room for improvement. My biggest role models for leadership are my mom, and my high school soccer coach. My mom is a nurse practitioner who specialized in wound care, and she started her own wound clinic at the hospital in our hometown. My mom and soccer coach have facilitated leadership by pushing me out of my comfort zone, and giving me the support I need when trying new things. I always have admired both of their work ethics. One quality my soccer coach had as a leader that I learned from him was leading by example. He never asked us to perform a task that he could perform himself. We knew what he expected out of us and we as a team appreciated the guidelines. I feel that I naturally have the trait to lead by example and this draws others towards me. Therefore I would have to say I’m an emergent

Role models are people who positively influence and shape future generations based on their actions alone. Some role models are revered for their religious impact while others are known for their excellence and bravery in the military. An example of a consequential military leader whom I look up to is Nathan Hale because he demonstrated an unwavering amount of fearlessness while willingly paying the ultimate sacrifice for the good of a nascent America which is why he should be regarded as a moral role model. Nathan Hale was born on June 6th, 1755 to puritan parents in Coventry, Connecticut. When he reached the age of 14, he did not have to travel far for education and chose to enroll in Yale’s class of 1773.…

My most significant leadership experience would be when I was in the Girls Varsity Tennis Team. I had been in the tennis team during my highschool years, for 2 years. During that time I learned a lot about being a leader, such as what it means to lead others, and what qualities a leader should have. When I first started playing tennis I started at the position on 2nd doubles, to me I took it as that I was not good enough to play against an opponent by myself on the court. Which was entirely true, because when I began playing I was not any good whatsoever.…

After completing both the DISC and JUNG Typology assessments, there are many outcomes that I found interesting. For starters, in the DISC assessment there were multiple categories that gave me various feedback. These included decisive, interactive, stabilizing, and cautious categories. My decisive score showed moderately low on the “D” spectrum and I thought that was very accurate. I tend to be hesitant on sharing my opinions in big group setting and I also would rather support someone else’s decisions rather than argue with them unless they are completely wrong.…

As I reflect on my leadership journey, I think that I have made slow, gradual progress, but progress nonetheless. When I was little, I tended to deliberately blend into the background and have others do things for me. Then, as I got older, took on new responsibilities, and developed my passions and interests, I started to also develop my leadership skills. Today, I am still a quiet, timid person, but I am working on stepping out of my comfort zone. Ever since I was little, I have always been a sort of wall flower.…

It was an honor to be selected especially because I am not always looked at as a typical leader because of my quiet nature. Throughout the season I learned that being a leader is not always easy. Since I am not the most outspoken person in the world I had to find different ways to lead the team through these tough times.…
