Leadership Personal Statement

Leadership is conditional, situational, relational and personal. The concept of leadership has many forms. My personal notion of leadership has changed over time and through various interactions. Leadership is the combined effort of individuals to create something that is positive and worthwhile for the greater community. It is the process by which this creation avalanches into fruition. Although my definition of leadership has not changed throughout this program, my understanding has broadened and deepened. We carry out leadership by applying attributes such as beliefs, values, ethics, knowledge and skills, and by reviewing this process analytically and critically. Leadership, for me, has been about studying and using the knowledge that I gain in the “classroom” and applying it to various leadership roles. I initially enrolled in this program four years ago. When I first started, my ultimate goal was to work in Residence Life. This program has helped me realize my ambitions run much deeper. I want to do work that makes a difference. I want to have an impact. Perhaps this will be through work in multicultural affairs, diversity & inclusion, women’s empowerment, or something else. What I have realized is I want to work with marginalized communities. Simply working in Residence Life is not enough for me anymore. My degree will, hopefully, help me reach my new goals. So I will continue to study leadership theory and analyze leaders as a means to improve my own leadership. Most importantly, however, I will continue to practice leadership and put my current and future skills to good use.
