In the past four years I have participated in the State College Area High School Renaissance Faire. At this time I have 2 different leadership positions one involves teaching a group of students to sword fight and the other leadership position involves advertising the club to the school. As a part of this club I have learned to speak in front of other people. Since my Sophomore year I have participated in the chamber orchestra group at my high school. This group if for the advanced orchestra students.…
Successful organizations all require 2 things: a strong team and strong leaders to direct the team to victory, and the Marching Pioneers is no exception to this rule. With an ensemble as large as the Marching Pioneers, there is no physically possible way 4 top tier leaders can give everyone the attention they need. Section leaders are necessary for the success of our fine organization, and there’s nothing more satisfying than being part of a leadership team that can add to the already growing success of this talented group. Here are just a few reasons why I would like to be in the next generation of saxophone section leaders. To be a section leader is like being given a lump of clay and being told to mold into the Statue of David.…
During the course of my senior year, I had to prepare myself and others for marching. The MPB (Mean Purple Band) has a very rich history in the small town of Carrizo Springs. Our marching band had a 29-year streak of receiving 1’s at UIL marching competition. This year we had a chance to turn it into a 30-year streak and I did not want to end my senior year breaking the streak. Being a section leader, I had to attend a camp of some sort hosted by our very own band directors.…
From middle school to high school, band became a vital part of my life. It was all I knew, it was where I felt comfortable, and this was where I pratically began learning about my leadership skills. However, my curiousity grew when I was introduced to Class Council. I thought that there was no difference, and I naively thought that since I have been a part of a leadership role for about 4 years, everyone knows me, so I thought Class Council could not be so hard. I was terribly wrong.…
I have been active in many groups throughout high school and each has had a great impact on my life. However, there are some that stand out above the rest and I know that those experiences will stay with me for the rest of my life. Being a member of the executive board for my schools music honors society is one of those activities. This high standing in the society has given me many experiences that have added to my skills in working in a stressful work environment. There are some on the board that are not as active in the events we have.…
People are always looking for someone to lead them. We all need someone to look to for help or inspiration, whether it be a movie star, author, or even a teacher. Nowadays leadership is key to success. Just recently I learned how true the previous statement is. As part of the marching band, I play the alto saxophone and have had to deal with poor leadership within the section.…
This past summer, I was given the opportunity to participate in the 2015 SASI Drum Major Camp, a leadership program founded by band directors in central Texas. Going into the camp, all I expected to learn were basic conducting patterns, some nice start-of-the-day stretches, and how to keep rowdy band members in line. That’s what I had seen from past Drum Majors, and what I believed to be the full depth of the leadership position. The truth unfolded quite differently than my expectations. The first day of this camp came as a shock.…
Hands shaking. Heart pounding. “You can do it”, I told myself as I rose to my feet in front of thirty of my biggest critics. Running for the Student Leadership Executive Board was the scariest and most rewarding moment of my life to this moment. This position has given me the opportunity to learn valuable skills needed in the real world.…
I am a section leader in band, for this position requires leadership. Direction, organization, and motivation are the responsibilities and sacrifices required to be able to lead and inspire people to become better. Boy scouts has allowed me to…
During the summer of 2016, I attended summer school for marching band. This event was not mandatory, since it was solely for the purpose of helping the incoming freshman, whom have no experience with music or marching. As one of many, I volunteered as a helper and as a veteran leader to facilitate the freshman to understand the techniques necessary to participate in marching band. Furthermore, I demonstrated how to be responsible by not missing practice days and informing the band director, a day before, if I was going to be absent. Acting as a role model will help ensure the new incoming freshman how to behave maturely, that hopefully will be effective in the future.…
When being a member of a large organization, members must interact with many different groups of people. They will face people of different races, ethnicities, incomes, backgrounds, skill levels, body types, sexualities, religions, etc., and still come together to meet goals that everyone shares (despite their personal differences). It is an important life skill to learn that you can be different from someone and still be able to grow with them. By coming together from differences to produce “one band, one sound” is an experience that will change you forever. Marching bands have significantly changed music education and the educational experiences of students in public schools.…
During concert season, I help lead saxophone sectionals from time to time. When we go to marching competitions, I'm also the head of the 'road crew', who loads and unloads the trailer we take to competitions. We move field props, front ensemble equipment, color guard equipment, and drum line instruments, as well as mellophones, trombones, and tenor/baritone saxophones. I make sure that everything has a place, and that it gets put in it's place. I don't necessarily care whether or not they look up to me, but instead, I care that they feel they can come to me with questions, concerns, or comments.…
I remembered back my drum major training. Our instructor told us that “The band is your mirror. If they are successful, it means you are being a good leader.” I made sure I gave them the leader they deserved. Three hours a day, three times a week, we practiced our hardest.…
1. What past experience do you bring to this position and how would it benefit KPU? One of my biggest accomplishments my junior and senior years of high school was my involvement in organizing and hosting many assemblies and school-wide events. During my junior year, I worked on a committee known as student support, and we were directly in charge of creating and putting on school wide assemblies. In this role, I learned how to organize large-scale events, find and invite big-name speakers to our school, write scripts, and get an impactful message across to all students.…
Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. Today, I want to write about my strengths that I had figured out. The most strength that I see in myself is my leadership skills. I had been the school prefect since I was in primary school. Starting from it, I learned on how to assist and help my teachers and friends at the school.…
