Introduction
What do teachers, doctors, pastors, and presidents have in common? They are all leaders. Leadership is a very valuable character quality. A leader is an individual who takes initiative, and guides movements in order to move society forward. There are many types of leaders on many different levels. A mentor may only be a leader to a single person. A pastor, on the other hand, might lead a congregation of thousands. Being in charge is not always an easy task. Therefore, anyone who is a leader must possess the skills of preparation, collaboration, and decisiveness.
Preparation
One of America’s founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin, once stated: By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail. Before a leader takes an initiative, the first thing he or she must do is prepare. In the preparation process, the leader must research to obtain knowledge about the topic in which he or she is leading. In essence, the leader is obligated to become an expert on the subject, so that he or she has grounds on which to lead on. Another step in preparation includes supplying materials. When leading a group of people, it is crucial that the leader collaborates with his inferiors. Even though leaders have some superiority, he or she would not be a leader if no one was following. Collaborating with fellow teammates is essential to gaining the team’s respect. When a leader takes interest in others ideas, people sense that they are of some importance, and therefore stand behind their leader. It is also important to take into consideration that leaders are human, and hence cannot think of everything. That is why there is a team of people; they create and bounce ideas off of each other.
