Leadership is a hard word and position to define. A good question to ask is what is leadership and what is a leader? It has a multitude of meanings and can differ from person to person with their views of what a leader is. No one person’s definition is truer than another’s when regarding what a leader and leadership is. There are many theories that seek to define what leadership is. Theories like the great man theory, trait theory, behavioral theory, contingency theory, transactional theory, and transformational theory. The dictionary defines leadership as “the position or function of a leader, a person who guides or directs a group”, which begs the question; what does it mean to lead or be a leader(The definition of leadership)? Outhwaite uses the transformational theory to help state her beliefs in the importance of leadership “Transformational skills are essential in the development of team working, however, understanding and commitment to the process of collaboration is required by all agencies and at all levels in order to implement change”(Outhwaite S.). Her belief is that leaders are necessary to help create successful work teams that will be efficient and help in the conception of new ideas. In an article written by Frank Hamilton, he expresses differing styles as “a clash of contexts exposed potential differences in beliefs and values among leaders in different cultures when a taken-for-granted reality in the United States came to the forefront of attention in the United Kingdom”(Hamilton, F., & Bean, C. J.). If a company only promoted leaders of the same style, the work and progress made by the company could become stagnant and workers would become jaded from hearing the same message from every team leader or manager they have. Differing leadership styles help increase variety in the workplace and also help identify the diverse attitudes and styles of the employees.
