While this organization is likely a frequent topic for team based organizations, I cannot help but want to study Google. Working in a software development industry, the speed to market, and cohesiveness of Google’s products is not an easy achievement. From the beginning, Google has encouraged teams, and team based development (Google, n.d.). On their career page, it doesn’t list departments, it labels its typical departments teams and roles (Google, n.d.a). This paper explores characteristics common in team-based organizations, which leadership styles work well in this type of an organization, and how teams impact leader power and shape the organization. Team-based organizations understand that taking care of people is first and foremost. Google goes to great length to attract talent, and then treat them very well, and set the physical environment to foster collaboration (Google, n.d.; Google, n.d.c). Supporting and rewarding collaboration fosters creativity and innovation (Brenton & Levin, 2012). Google does this be creating open, fun and engaging workspaces, and paying for healthy food free of charge (Google, n.d.c). People are the center of a team-based organization.
The two most effective leadership styles for team-based organizations are transformative and authentic leadership. Transformative leadership aims to encourage the collective greatness of leaders and followers by pursuing mutual goals (Keskes, 2014). According to Warrick (2014), even though many organizations tout teamwork and teams as critical for the organization, many leaders do not know how to create strong teams, or team based environments. Teams need five components to be effective: effective team leadership, capable and committed team members, team norms that create a high performance climate, clear mission, vision and goals for the team, a systematic way to manage and improve team processes, and an organized way to implement continuous learning to improve results (Warrick, 2014). Senior leadership to set the mission and vision of the company, and hire the right types of people to work on teams, along with setting the organizational structure and processes to support teams. It is imperative for the executive team to work and behave as a team, in order for the rest of the organization to work effectively. Small cracks in alignment within the executive team will lead to major schisms lower in the organization (Lincioni, 2002). The other type of leader is a team leader.
