Leadership and the Graduate Nursing Role

The result of the quiz showed that my leadership style was Participative Leadership. Accounting to About.com Psychology (n.d.), participative leaders accept input from group members when making decisions and solving problems, but the leader retains the final say when choices are made. Group members tend to be encouraged and motivated by this style of leadership. This style of leadership often leads to more effective and accurate decisions, since no leader can be an expert in all areas. Input from group members with specialized knowledge and expertise creates a more complete basis for decision-making.

In order for graduate level nurses to become a good leader, mentoring is very important. Grossmen (2012) describes the definition of mentoring that, “mentoring in nursing encompassed a guided, reciprocal, formally or informally assigned over a mutually agreed-on period that empowers the mentor and mentee to develop personally and professionally within the auspices of a caring, collaborative, culturally competent, and respectful environment” (p. 28). Mentoring is required to ensure the development of future nursing leaders and Mentoring bridges the gap between education and real-world experience (Tracy & Hanson, 2014). Mentors have been defined as being competent and self-confident, having qualities that epitomize success in their own careers, and having the ability and desire to help others succeed (Hamric, 2014). Mentoring relationships can be developed based on specific needs of the APN mentee (e.g., writing for publication, developing professional presentation skills) or on the general development of career and leadership skills. Harrington (2011) has reported that mentoring new NPs will accelerate their development as primary care providers (Hamric, 2014). Working 24 hours is not healthy. We need a period of rest, break, or relaxing, or timeout. Timeout is like a recharging battery forme to come back in my role again. Although I am a person who have difficulty saying “no”, but I also know my limitation when can I do or cannot. The fact that I am come from other country makes me become more of cultural awareness to others. Especially in healthcare that we need to take care of everyone no matter where they are come from, what language they speak, what skin color they have. Empathy is very important.
