As established that there is a self-appointed weak leader in a group. All the members irrespective of their traits of free riding and critical opinion are working under him. Thus, the leader needs to be approached and facilitated to resolve the issues of the team and consider each member and deal with them respectively based on their mode of conduct. A good leader holds the quality to influence the team and give it a direction. Depending on the circumstance of the team and its member, leader can be demonstrated as a strict tutor or as a congenial friend. Thus, facilitating the leader can bring about the change.

‘Coaching’ is aimed to be high in both direction and support. It will direct the team members to work on the team’s task while pacifying and in turn eliminating the free riding and non- productive criticism. Further ‘Coaching’ from the leader will guide the members and encourage them to ‘Group think’ thus suppressing blocking in the team.
To implement the strategy for handling the described weak leadership that “does not provide clear, compliant directions”, structure needs to be reformed. Structure is designed to provide a clear direction and offer distribution of responsibilities and goals for the team and members. Explicitly assigning the task and who needs to accomplish it. If the leader is willing to lead the team, he is required to be directive and use the ‘telling’ technique depending on the team members, especially in case of free riders. They need to be directed and motivated by the team leader. ‘Telling’ and being directive with the free riders will give time a path to follow and will help them set up a goal. Later as the lack of willingness in the free riders needs to obstructed. They are required to be motivated. ‘Coaching’ the free riders will support them and motivate them. ‘Coaching’ them will help them work for the set-up goal.
