He studied law in Porbandar India. While he studied law, he became a leader in a movement. This movement was to make India independent from British institutions. His father, Karamchand Gandhi, was the chief minister of Porbandar India. His mother, Putlibai, was religious to the point where she made it a habit to fast. At the age of 13, he was wed through an arranged marriage to Kasturba Makhanji. Who later years decided to rebel. She rebelled by smoking,eating meat and stealing change from household servants. Then while Gandhi was studying law in London, England his wife gave birth to his first son. After completing college and returning to India, his arrival home brought some devastating news. This news was about his mother. She had passed away just weeks before his arrival. Since Gandhi was raised in India by religious parents it helped him. While Gandhi, his wife and the others were detained at the Aga Khan Palace. The Prime Minister, Winston Churchill found out his health was failing. Gandhi was released from the 19 month detainment. Sadly before they were released, his 74 year old wife passed away in February 1944, in Gandhi arms. When getting out of imprisonment, he found out some great news. That the Labour party had beaten Churchill 's conservatives in the British election of 1945. The party started negotiating for Indian independence with the Indian National Congress. Gandhi was a main role in the negotiations. Although he soon found out that he didn 't have the power necessary to fill his hopes for a unified India. So since Gandhi did not have the power he came up with one last plan. This plan would call for the effort of the subcontinent. Who would along religious borders split into two different free states. This only caused Violence between Hindus and Muslims to spread even worse than it was before the plan. Even so, that the killings multiplied.
When Gandhi would go out all he would see was mass destruction. Even in areas that weren 't like that before he tried to make peace. Gandhi wanted to make the bloodshed and the rioting stop so he started to fast. But, yet this only made Hindus think of Gandhi as a traitor because he felt pity for the Muslims.
