Leadership Characteristics

What asked to describe what constitute a leader many traits come to mind. Traits such as confidence, integrity, perseverance, and motivator are all good descriptors of what makes a good leader. The purpose of this essay is to provide a synthesis of three empirical articles and how they use common themes of how personality traits and different types of leadership values will help a person to be successful in their career. Argument can be made that leaders are born with all the characteristic described above whereas some would argue that leaders are formed through life experiences.

(2012), entitled, “Impact of Personal Growth Projects on Leadership Identity Development,” suggest that personal growth projects that as it relates to interpersonal development enhances our capacity to lead others as we learn from our experiences, acquire new skills, and develop our self-concept” (Fritz, Brown, Lunde, & Banset, 2004). Self-awareness is beneficial in developing leaders in large part because one learn their limitations, strengths, weakness, and purpose based off experiences in life. It is from these previous experiences that one gains self-confidence in his or her abilities, as a result self-confidence creates boldness. Odom et al would argue that leaders are developed based off the results of the study. The study suggests that individuals are more apt to take on leadership roles if they are given the opportunity to grow. In the second article, written by Odom, S. F., Boyd, B. L., & Williams, J.
