By doing this, I created a standard that lead people toward that vision, and provided an example for them on how to do it. By doing this, I was also able to motivate, encourage and empower others to collaborate and work as a team. Another example is when I developed clubs in the houses. I met with my staff and encouraged them to pair up and develop clubs that they would like to run in an eight- week time frame. The clubs would have weekly goals, and an overall goal. An example is two staff collaborated to develop a photography club. Week one, the staff would review parts of a camera with the students, week two, they would learn about camera settings, and by the end of week eight, the students would have taken pictures, created a collage, and sent to their families as a gift. I saw value in motivating staff to be creative empower them to lead and teach, and helped them to understand their true role as motivators and collaborators. In both scenarios, I could apply that learning to other situations that involve staff in need of conflict resolution and/or when forward or proactive thinking is needed. I believe that the characteristics of effective leaders are being a good communicator, someone who is approachable, someone who takes some risk, caring, motivational, and leads by example.
With that said, some typical challenges that leaders face are that they may lack emotional intelligence, find difficulty in fostering professional relationships with their staff, and sometimes have staff that are not invested in their job. Some ways that leaders can overcome these obstacles are that thy be more self-aware, take the time to invest in getting to know their staff so that good professional relationships can begin to be forged, and to involve their staff in decision making so that they feel more invested.
I was also blessed to have worked with a great leader who influenced me in the workplace. His name is Jim Weaver, and he was my Sr. Vice President. Mr. Weaver taught me many things over the years as it relates to leadership. His strengths were his ability to have a vision and see that
