A Reflective Essay On How To Be An Effective Leader

It was useful taking the leadership assessment survey. After taking the survey, it increased my awareness in both my skills and performance in my professional career. It’s great to have surveys that served a great purpose and guides you to open your mind to what areas you need more improvement in order to be a better Leader. My average score was 22-27 which leaves me at a moderate to high range level of skill approaches. In chapter 3, we read about three different types of skills approaches. Technical, Human, and Conceptual these three skills that have different purposes depending on the level of management. Technical skills gear more towards supervisory management, where as Human and Conceptual are more for top management CEO etc. (Northouse …show more content…
Yet, there are some skills that I feel can work on to become a better leader. For instants out of the three Skill approaches, I want to improve in my Technical skills. It would make me a much more effective leader. I find technical skills challenging for me because I do not have a set vision for what the job entails. I tend to lean towards how to make a workflow better not constantly working a workflow. My mind gets distracted with ideas. Supervising a group sounds very easy but being put in that position for me was very challenging. It was challenging because managing a group in contrary to a project is harder to accomplish a goal. Managing people is complicated, there are many personalities, where in a project there isn’t and recently I been noticing I’m a creator that I don’t managing situations the best either. I managed with my busy schedule to provide an event filled with entertainments, raffle prizes, going away gifts and abundance of delicious food which all was prepared by me as well for the menu and literary. At the time, I was working full-time at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center as a Patient Information Specialist/ Unit coordinator 55 hours a week. As if that was not enough, during the same period of time one of my other accomplished leadership roles is, I currently develop and created a new dance program for the Brookline Teen Center. Through my leadership in high school evolving the dance program, they felt I would be best to run the program because the dedication and the communication I have kept with the community of Brookline. The Brookline teen center is very new. I’ve been creating on a day to day basis new projects to make our program grow and marketing schemes that also led us to a 75% increase in headcount of teens coming into the teen center. The qualities of a great leader are a good personality and work value, and to be a visionary. My organic personality has always led me to have long lasting connections.
