I want you to picture two ships heading in the same direction toward a destination or goal. These two ships represent my two ships that comprise my definition of leadership. Leadership is two ships-Relationships and Ownership. These are the backbone of leadership in any organization. As a leader, I have to establish and nurture relationships with my members so that I know their strengths and areas for growth. Learning about their personal/family life, educates me on how to manage them and maximize their time. This knowledge empowers me to strategically invest in them and their role in our organization. We all have to feel ownership in the organization and its missions. As a leader, I have to instill ownership in each member. They should have input on developing the vision and mission of our detachment. Furthermore, they should have involvement in prioritizing our goals, strategies, and day-to-day operations. As a result, they are fully vested in our detachment and its mission. When I think of my leadership experiences and career, I reflect on some individuals who have influenced me positively and negatively.
